Batteries store energy for devices away from the mains or for standby when it fails, and power supplies convert mains into the voltage equipment needs. Consumer cells

Duracell and GP alkaline batteries cover AA, AAA, C, D and 9V (PP3) sizes, and lithium cells include CR123 and CR2 cells, GP AA and PP3 lithium batteries, and coin cells such as the CR2032 and CR1620 for cameras and remotes.

Standby batteries

Sealed lead-acid VRLA (AGM) batteries back up alarm panels, fire panels and power supplies during a mains failure, from the NP2.1-12 at 12V 2.1Ah to the Yuasa Y17-12 at 12V 17Ah, with Faston or M5 terminals.

Uninterruptible power

Eaton UPS units, including the compact 3SM36 mini UPS, the 5PX line-interactive range and 9PX units, keep network equipment, recorders and servers running through power cuts and give time for a controlled shutdown. The 9PX2200IRTNBS and 9PX3000IRTBPH fit a rack or stand as a tower.

Supplies, chargers and converters

Boxed and DIN-rail power supplies from Haydon, Dantech, Elmdene and AMG Systems power security and network equipment. Chargers include the Mercury 690.004UK for 2V, 6V and 12V lead acid batteries and Hikvision DS-MDS001 dock stations that charge body-worn cameras. The Mercury 651.001UK and 651.004UK step-down converters run 110V equipment from UK mains, and the 651.031UK runs 120V equipment. Adastra and All-Rack PDUs distribute power in a 19" rack.

What battery does an alarm panel use?

Wired alarm and fire panels usually take a 12V sealed lead-acid VRLA (AGM) standby battery, such as the Yuasa NP12-12, sized to the panel's standby time. Yuasa batteries in this range run from the NP2.1-12 at 2.1Ah through the NP12-12 at 12Ah to the Y17-12 at 17Ah.

What is a UPS and do I need one?

A UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, keeps equipment running from its internal batteries when the mains fails and conditions the supply while it is present. Eaton UPS units here, such as the 5SC and 5PX ranges, suit recorders, network switches and servers that must not lose power abruptly.

Which batteries do smoke alarms and wireless detectors use?

Many wireless detectors use lithium cells such as the CR123 or the CR2032 coin cell, which Duracell and GP make in this range, while some domestic alarms use 9V (PP3) or AA alkaline cells. Check the battery type on the detector's product page, as sealed 10-year alarms have no replaceable cell.

What is the difference between alkaline and lithium batteries?

They are different chemistries: alkaline cells, such as Duracell Plus Power and GP Ultra+, suit everyday devices in AA, AAA, C, D and 9V sizes, while lithium cells include 3V CR123 and CR2 cells from Duracell and GP and 3V coin cells such as the CR2032. The GP 656.334UK AA and 656.331UK PP3 9V lithium batteries are described as extra long life and suited to smoke alarms.

Can I run American or 110V equipment from UK mains?

Yes, with a step-down converter rated above the equipment's wattage. Mercury step-down voltage converters convert 230V to 110V, from 45W to 100W, and a 240V to 120V converter is rated 300W. Check the equipment's rating plate before choosing the converter.

What does a rack PDU do?

A rack PDU, or power distribution unit, mounts in a 19" rack and provides a row of outlets for the equipment in it. Adastra 1U PDUs come with 6 or 8 UK sockets, 10 IEC (C13) outlets, or 2 UK and 8 IEC outlets on the 776.497UK, and the All-Rack PDU6HSUR adds surge protection to 6 UK sockets.

What is a CR2032 battery?

A CR2032 is a 3V lithium coin cell used in small electronics such as remotes and key fobs. Duracell CR2032 coin cells come in 2 packs, and GP lithium button cells such as the CR1620 come in 5 packs, so match the code printed on the old cell.

What is a VRLA battery?

A VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid) battery is a sealed lead-acid battery that needs no topping up, commonly used as standby power in alarm and fire panels. Yuasa VRLA AGM batteries here run from the NP2.1-12 at 12V 2.1Ah to the Y17-12 at 12V 17Ah, with Faston or M5 terminals.
