About this product

Please note: this is a non-returnable item (excluding faulty goods)

The Fermax 9641 is the MDS Marine digital display module, a spare-part display unit for inclusion in Marine door entry panels running on the MDS Digital System.

This is a component, not a complete system. What it fits is the whole of the buying decision. Fermax describes the 9641 as a display module of spare parts for inclusion in Marine door entry panels and the MDS Digital System.

In an MDS digital panel it takes its place alongside the 4+N amplifier module and a BUS2, VDS, MDS or DUOX digital keypad module. The module carries a high contrast backlit LCD of two lines at sixteen characters per line, with an adjustable backlight, and it is what a visitor actually reads at the door. Its job is twofold.

It lets a caller search the electronic directory of residents using the panel's browser buttons. It also shows communication status while a call is in progress. A call to a home can be placed in two ways.

Key the code assigned to that home and press the bell key, or find the entry in the electronic directory with the browser buttons and press the bell key. Fermax's own spare parts catalogue lists this item as code 9641, MDS Marine display.

Key features

  • Two line, sixteen character display: the module carries a high contrast LCD of two lines at sixteen characters per line, which is what a caller reads while using the panel.
  • Adjustable backlight: the display is backlit and Fermax states the backlight level is adjustable, so it can be set to suit a dark lobby or a bright street frontage.
  • Electronic resident directory: callers can search and view the list of residents on the screen using the browser buttons rather than needing to know a code in advance.
  • Two ways to call a home: a caller can key the code assigned to the home and press the bell key. The alternative is to find the entry in the directory with the browser buttons and press the bell key.
  • Communication status on screen: the module displays communication status information during a call, so a visitor can tell what the panel is doing.
  • MDS Digital System module: it is built for the MDS Digital System, where an MDS digital panel comprises a 4+N amplifier module, this display module and a BUS2, VDS, MDS or DUOX digital keypad module.
  • Marine panel fitment: Fermax specifies it for inclusion in Marine door entry panels, and lists it in its spare parts catalogue among the Marine panel spares.
  • Published module size: Fermax gives the module dimensions as 105.2 mm wide by 95 mm high, so the aperture in the panel can be checked before ordering.
  • Supplied as a spare part: this is sold as a replacement or service item for an existing panel rather than as a complete door entry kit.
  • Built for the Marine range: Fermax describes Marine as its anti-vandal panel line, made in 2.5 mm thick stainless steel and specified for corrosive, humid and demanding atmospheres.

Use cases

You buy this when an existing Fermax Marine entrance panel on the MDS Digital System has lost its display and the rest of the panel is sound. The screen may have failed, gone dim, been damaged in an attack on the panel, or been water-damaged on an exposed frontage. Replacing the display module keeps the amplifier, the keypad module and the stainless fascia in service.

That is a very different job from replacing a whole entrance panel and reprogramming the system. It is also the part to hold as a spare on estates, student accommodation, seafront and dockside blocks, and other exposed sites. On those sites a panel takes weather or abuse, and a dead display means residents cannot be called at all.

Before ordering, confirm two things on the existing panel. It must be a Marine panel rather than another Fermax panel line, and the system must be MDS rather than VDS, BUS2 or DUOX. Fermax publishes separate display modules for those systems and they are not interchangeable.

Fermax 9641 MDS Digital Display Module for Marine Door Entry Panels

Who this is for

For the installer: this is a service part, so the whole job is identification before ordering. Fermax publishes the 9641 as the MDS Marine digital display module, belonging to the Marine panel line and to the MDS Digital System.

It is not the display for the VDS, BUS2 or DUOX versions of the same panel, which Fermax lists under separate codes. In an MDS digital panel the module sits with a 4+N amplifier module and a BUS2, VDS, MDS or DUOX digital keypad module, so check what is already in the panel before you order. The published module size is 105.2 mm wide by 95 mm high, which is the figure to check against the aperture.

Fermax's spare parts catalogue lists the part as code 9641, MDS Marine display, and gives 980383 as the obsolete reference it replaces.

In plain English: this is the little screen from the front of a door entry panel, sold on its own as a replacement. On this kind of entrance panel, a visitor does not press a button with your name printed next to it.

Instead they use the arrow buttons to scroll through a list of residents on the screen, or type in a flat's number, and then press the bell button to ring you. The screen is also what tells them the call has gone through. If that screen has stopped working, nobody can be called from the front door, and this is the part that fixes it without replacing the whole panel.

It is a repair part rather than a complete system, so it only makes sense if you already have the panel it belongs to.

Buying this in the UK

  • Identify the system before ordering. Fermax makes MDS, VDS, BUS2 and DUOX versions of the Marine display, and this code is the MDS one; the codes are not interchangeable.
  • Identify the panel range too. This module is published for the Marine panel line, which is Fermax's stainless steel anti-vandal range, not for the Cityline or Skyline panels.
  • If the paperwork or the panel label on site quotes 980383, that is the old reference for this same part. Fermax's spare parts catalogue lists 980383 as obsolete and 9641 as the spare part code that replaces it.
  • This is a non-returnable line excluding faulty goods, so the identification above needs to be settled before the order goes in rather than after the part arrives.
  • It is a special order item rather than a shelf line. If a panel is out of service and a building has no working front door entry, tell us and we will confirm the lead time before you commit.
  • If you need the module's depth, its weight, or written confirmation that a given panel serial takes this exact code, ask us. We will put the question to Fermax rather than guess it from the panel line's own figures.

Questions we get asked

  • Is this the whole entrance panel? No. It is the display module only. The amplifier, the keypad module, the buttons and the stainless fascia are separate parts and stay in place.
  • Will it fit my Fermax panel? It fits Marine door entry panels running the MDS Digital System. If your panel is VDS, BUS2 or DUOX, or if it is a different Fermax panel range, this is the wrong code.
  • How big is the screen aperture? Fermax publishes the module as 105.2 mm wide by 95 mm high. Measure the existing module before ordering rather than working from a drawing of a different panel.
  • Is the display lit? Yes. Fermax specifies a high contrast backlit LCD with an adjustable backlight, which is what makes the resident directory readable at night.
  • How many names does the screen show at once? The display is two lines of sixteen characters, so a caller scrolls the directory with the browser buttons rather than seeing the whole list at once.
  • Is it weatherproof on its own? Fermax's published description covers the Marine panel line's construction, in 2.5 mm stainless steel for corrosive and humid atmospheres. It does not give a separate protection rating for this module out of the panel, so treat the panel as the weatherproof element.
