Choosing Chord Products

Start with how the microphone reaches the mixer, by radio or by cable, then add power, stands and cases.

UHF wireless systems and transmitters

The 171.983UK is a UHF wireless beltpack system with a half rack-width receiver, supplied with a choice of neckband or lavalier microphone, rack ears, a mains adaptor and 2 x AA batteries. Transmitters are matched to a receiver family: the 171.988UK handheld is made for NU1 systems and the 171.927UK handheld for NU20 dual channel receivers. NU4 replacements such as the yellow 171.954UK and blue 171.957UK come in 4 different frequencies.

Lavalier and neckband microphones

The Chord tie-clip and neckband mics have a threaded 3.5mm mono jack and work with most laptop microphone inputs. The 171.855UK is a cardioid tie-clip mic weighing 20g, the 171.857UK a discreet beige omnidirectional neckband, and the 171.966UK a black cardioid neckband.

Wired microphones, DI boxes and phantom power

The DM02 173.607UK is a handheld dynamic vocal microphone with a presence boost, supplied with a mic holder, lead and ABS carry case. For instruments, the 173.292UK passive DI box has three pad settings and a ground float or lift switch, and the 173.293UK active DI runs from 9-52V phantom power, a 9V battery or a 12V DC adaptor. The 173.481UK and 173.482UK supply +48V phantom power for condenser microphones.

Frequently asked questions

Which Chord transmitter works with my receiver?

Choose a transmitter made for your receiver’s system and set to its frequency. The 171.988UK and 171.991UK handhelds have a pilot tone for NU1 systems, the 171.929UK and 171.930UK beltpacks are for NU20 dual channel receivers, and NU4 replacements such as the red 171.955UK are at 864.80MHz. The 171.954UK NU4 handheld runs on 2 x AA batteries.

Will a Chord lavalier or neckband mic fit my beltpack?

Yes, if the beltpack takes a threaded 3.5mm mono jack. The 171.968UK lavalier and the 171.965UK neckband use that connector and are designed for VHF and UHF beltpack transmitters, and they also work with most laptop microphone inputs. Beige versions such as the 171.978UK neckband are discreet choices for presenters and stage performers.

Do Chord UHF wireless systems need a licence in the UK?

No, the 171.983UK and 171.984UK UHF beltpack systems operate without a licence in the UK and EU. They use a pilot tone and mute circuit for a stable signal, and the half rack-width receiver fits a 19" rack with the included rack ears and front mounting antenna accessories. A mains adaptor and 2 x AA batteries come in the box.

What does a DI box do?

A DI box converts a high impedance instrument output into a low impedance line signal for a mixing console. The 173.292UK passive DI has three pad settings and a ground float or lift switch with an RF and mains filter. The 173.293UK active DI adds an internal buffer amplifier that prevents losses over long cable runs.

When do I need a phantom power unit?

You need one when a condenser microphone must be powered and your mixer or interface cannot supply +48V. The 173.481UK is a single channel unit and the 173.482UK a dual channel unit, both giving +48V and supplied with a UK 5Vdc 1A power adaptor. The 173.293UK active DI box can also run from 9-52V phantom power.

How do I carry rack-mounted audio equipment?

Use a padded 19" rack bag sized to your units. The 127.146UK, 127.147UK and 127.148UK take 2U, 3U and 4U, with an internal wooden frame, rack strip front and rear, securing straps and a zipped outer pocket. For shallow equipment, the 127.187UK is 255mm deep, and the 127.035UK transit bag has segmented foam for a wireless system.
