Warm white of 2700K or 3000K feels relaxed in living rooms and bedrooms, cool white at 4000K suits kitchens, bathrooms and workspaces, and daylight near 6000K suits garages and plant rooms. Many fittings here let you choose on site, such as the BLP10CCT bollard with 3000K, 4000K or 5700K settings.

Look for IP44 or higher near a bath or shower and on an outdoor wall, and IP67 for a light set into the ground. The Knightsbridge LED bathroom mirrors such as the ML500 and MLC6045SD are IP44, outdoor fittings such as the FLN20 floodlight and BLP10CCT bollard are IP65, and the 316WALK ground light is IP67 for a fitting set into the ground.

Compare lumens, not watts: lumens measure the light given out, and watts the power used. The FLN20 floodlight gives 2240lm from 20W, and the CLD4AESC filament candle gives 485 lumens from 4W, which is equivalent to a 40W incandescent lamp.

Yes, if the lamp or fitting is marked dimmable and the dimmer suits it. The CLD4AESC candle lamp is compatible with most trailing edge dimmers, and the CL5KW smart candle dims through its Wi-Fi app. For fittings that take a lamp, such as the 316WALK ground light, dimming depends on the lamp fitted.

A profile is not essential, but it gives a neater result: the aluminium channel holds the tape straight and a diffuser hides the individual LEDs. Knightsbridge profiles include the 2MSUR for surface mounting under cabinets or shelves, the 2MPLA for plastering into a wall and the 1MFLR for recessing into a floor. They take LED flex of 12mm width or less.

Wi-Fi lamps and app-linked switches. The Knightsbridge CL5KW is a 5W E14 candle lamp with RGB colour and white tuning from 2700K to 6500K on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Ajax SoloButton touch panels form the front of an Ajax LightSwitch, giving touch, app and automation control through an Ajax hub.

A powered aluminium track is fixed to the ceiling and spotlights clip on anywhere along it, so they can be moved and re-aimed without rewiring. The Knightsbridge TRK1MAW is a 1m 230V 10A single circuit track and the TRK3MABK a 3m black version; both have live and dead end accessories in the box.

DMX is the control standard that lets a lighting desk run many fixtures from one position, with a fixture taking a set number of channels. The Citronic SilentPAR-216 is a PAR can with 18 x 12W RGBWA+UV LEDs and a whisper-quiet fan that works in 6, 8 or 11 channel DMX-512 modes or on its own auto and sound-activated programs.

Lighting built into the mirror, often with extras. The Knightsbridge MLC6045SD adds a motion sensor switch, a 16W demister pad and a dual voltage 115V / 230V shaver socket, the ML500 is a 500mm circular mirror with a motion sensor, and the MLBA6045E runs on 8 x AA batteries where there is no supply.

Walkover models can. The Knightsbridge 316WALK is an IP67 stainless steel ground light rated for a 1000kg load, taking a GU10 or MR16 lamp of up to 35W. The CAPWGU is an IP65 walkover ground light for heavy foot traffic, taking a dimmable GU10 lamp, with a 88mm diameter.
