Outdoor Lighting: 7 Ideas That Look Expensive and Aren't (2026)

Here is the short answer: outdoor lighting looks expensive when it comes from below or from the side, and cheap when it comes from above. Uplight the things worth looking at, light the ground you walk on, and never light the whole garden at once.

Almost every disappointing garden lighting job we have seen has the same cause. Someone bolts a bright floodlight to the back wall of the house, switches it on, and gets a car park. Everything is lit, nothing is interesting, and you can see straight through the windows of the house next door.

Fifty years on Villa Road has taught us that this is a subtraction problem, not an addition problem. Here are seven ideas that work, in the order we would fit them.

1. Graze a wall instead of flooding a garden

Put a narrow-beam fitting close to a textured surface — brick, render, stone, a hedge — and aim it steeply up the face. The light rakes across the texture and every irregularity throws a small shadow. A plain brick wall becomes the best-looking feature in the garden, and it costs about £15 a fitting.

The closer to the wall you sit the fitting, the harder the grazing effect. Roughly 150–300mm from the face is the range worth experimenting in.

Trade tip: buy spikes prewired and leave the tails long. The single most common regret in garden lighting is fittings that are 300mm short of where you eventually decide they should live, because the plant they were lighting grew, or you moved the pot, or the effect was better a metre to the left. Long tails cost nothing and make the scheme adjustable for years.

2. Uplight the trees, not the lawn

A mature tree or a large shrub uplit from the base is the single highest-impact thing you can do outdoors. The canopy catches the light, the trunk goes into silhouette, and the effect reads from inside the house through a window — which is where you will actually see your garden for most of a British year.

Two or three uplights on structure will transform a garden. Twenty lights spread evenly across it will not.

3. Light the path, not the person on it

Path lighting exists so people can see where to put their feet. It does not need to illuminate their face, and if it does you have fitted it too high.

Bollards at 400–1000mm throw a controlled pool downwards and outwards. Spaced at roughly three to four metres they give a rhythm of light that reads as a route rather than a runway.

The CBL15SS is a 15W IP65 stainless steel LED bollard, 950mm high, in warm white 3000K. Warm white is deliberate — a 3000K path light flatters planting and brickwork, where a 6000K one makes a garden look like a service yard.

Where you want a lamp you can change rather than an integrated LED, the GDL3 is a 1100mm GU10 garden post light in stainless steel with an anthracite finish, rated IP54.

4. Deck and step lights: low, small, plentiful

Ground-recessed lights in decking or a step edge do a job nothing else does — they mark a level change at exactly the height a foot needs it, without putting anything at eye level.

The LEDM08W1 is a 1.7W LED ground deck light, IP65, 4000K cool white, 90 lumens, in stainless steel. Ninety lumens sounds like nothing and is exactly right — you are marking an edge, not lighting a room. Five of these along a step edge look considered. One 20W floodlight aimed at the same steps looks like a fire escape.

5. Up-and-down wall lights: the workhorse

Two beams from one fixing point, one washing up the wall and one down. On a house elevation, either side of a door or spaced along a boundary wall, they do more visual work per fitting than anything else outdoors.

The WALL2L is a stainless steel up-and-down wall light rated IP65, GU10, 2x35W, dimmable, surface mounted, 162mm high and 60mm in diameter. Where you want a single downward beam only — over a back door, or along a boundary where uplight would spill into a neighbour's window — the WALL1LBK is the fixed GU10 version in black powder-coated aluminium, IP65, 35W max.

Trade tip: on a coastal or heavily-salted site — and that includes anywhere within reach of winter road salt spray — powder-coated aluminium generally outlasts budget stainless steel. Cheap stainless in the 200 series will tea-stain within a couple of British winters and it looks dreadful long before it fails. If the fitting is going somewhere exposed, either pay for 304-grade or choose the powder-coated body and stop worrying about it.

6. Warm, and dimmable, and on a timer

Three settings decide whether a garden scheme feels expensive:

  • Colour temperature. 2700–3000K outdoors. Cool white belongs on a security light, not on a planting bed.
  • Dimming. A dimmable outdoor scheme run at 60% is almost always better than the same scheme at full. Most of the fittings above are dimmable — use it.
  • Control. Photocell on at dusk, timer off at a sensible hour. Garden lighting burning at 3am is lighting nobody is looking at.

7. What to leave dark

The hardest discipline, and the one that separates a scheme from a switch-on. Leave the lawn dark. Leave the fence line dark. Leave the middle distance dark. Contrast is the entire effect — a lit tree only reads as lit because the space around it is not.

Where DIY stops

Swapping an existing outdoor fitting on an existing circuit is usually fine for a competent DIYer. Running a new outdoor circuit, burying cable in the garden, or adding an external supply is notifiable work under Part P and needs a registered electrician. Outdoor circuits need 30mA RCD protection and buried cable needs the right type, depth and marking — none of that is guesswork territory.
