Shaver Sockets and Bathroom Power: What's Actually Allowed (2026)

A shaver socket is the only socket you're normally allowed in a UK bathroom, and the reason is the isolating transformer inside it. That transformer separates the shaver from the mains supply, so a fault can't put you in a circuit with the earth you're standing on.

An ordinary 13A socket has no such separation. That is the whole difference, and it's why you can't simply fit a normal socket and be careful.

People assume the rule is about splashing. It isn't — it's about what happens when you're wet, barefoot on a tiled floor, holding something faulty.

1. What the transformer actually does

Inside a shaver socket is a small isolating transformer. Power goes in from the mains on one winding and comes out on a separate winding with no electrical connection between them.

The practical effect: the output has no reference to earth. Touch one side of it while standing on a wet floor and there's no completed circuit back to earth through you.

That's genuine electrical separation, not a splash guard, and it's why the device is permitted where a 13A socket is not.

2. The 20VA limit — and why your hairdryer won't work

Look at the rating: 20VA. That's the total the transformer will deliver, and it's tiny — roughly 20 watts.

An electric shaver draws a few watts. An electric toothbrush charger, less. Both are comfortably inside it.

A hairdryer draws 1,500 to 2,000 watts. That is not a little over the limit, it is roughly a hundred times over it. It will not work, and repeatedly trying will kill the transformer.

Trade Tip: when somebody asks for "a socket in the bathroom for a hairdryer", a shaver socket is not the answer and no shaver socket ever will be. The correct answer is a socket outside the bathroom door, on the landing or in the bedroom. We have this conversation most weeks, and the disappointment is always better than the alternative — which is somebody running an extension lead in, which is genuinely dangerous.

3. Dual voltage, and why 115V is on there

Most shaver sockets offer both 115V and 230V outputs, with two different socket profiles on the same plate.

The 115V output exists for two-pin shavers built to the US standard — common on travel razors and on plenty of grooming kit sold internationally. The socket detects which you've plugged in and supplies accordingly.

It costs nothing extra in practice and removes a whole category of "it doesn't fit" from a bathroom that guests use.

4. Zones, and where it can actually go

Bathrooms are divided into zones, and the zone decides what may be installed there.

Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower itself. Nothing mains-voltage, ever.

Zone 1 is directly above it, up to 2.25m. Heavily restricted.

Zone 2 extends 0.6m beyond Zone 1. This is where a shaver socket normally lives — beside a mirror, above a basin, clear of the bath.

A shaver socket must be sited so it cannot be reached from a bath or shower, and far enough from a basin that it won't be splashed directly. IP41 — the rating on all three units above — is a dry-location bathroom rating, not a wet one, so position matters as much as the product.

Trade Tip: plan the shaver socket before the mirror goes up, not after. It needs to be beside the mirror at head height to be any use, and the cable route has to arrive there. Nine times out of ten it gets remembered once the tiling is done, and then it goes wherever the cable can reach rather than where anyone actually shaves.

5. What about a normal socket in a bathroom?

There is one exception, and it's narrow: a standard 13A socket may be installed in a room containing a bath or shower only if it is at least 3 metres horizontally from the boundary of Zone 1.

In a typical UK bathroom, that distance simply doesn't exist. In a large en-suite or a wet room in a converted space it occasionally does — which is why the rule is worth knowing rather than flatly saying "never".

If you're within 3 metres, the answer isn't a different socket. It's a socket in a different room.

6. Where DIY stops — and here it stops firmly

A room containing a bath or shower is a special location under Part P in England and Wales. That's a higher bar than the rest of the house, and it exists precisely because of the wet-and-earthed combination this whole article is about.

Swapping a like-for-like shaver socket on an existing, correctly-isolated, sound circuit is within reach of a competent DIYer — isolate at the consumer unit, prove dead, photograph the terminals first.

Installing a new one is not. It's an addition to a circuit in a special location, it needs testing and certifying, and if you can't self-certify it, it's an electrician's job. Rules differ in Scotland; check your local requirement.

And to say it plainly, because it's the thing that actually hurts people: do not run an extension lead into a bathroom. Not for a hairdryer, not for a heater, not temporarily.
