Fused Connection Units & Spurs

A fused connection unit, often called a fused spur, feeds one fixed appliance through its own fuse, whether a boiler, an immersion heater or a towel rail. The Knightsbridge range here includes switched and unswitched 13A spurs, units with a neon indicator or a flex outlet, RCD fused spurs, IP66 outdoor spurs, metal clad spurs and Grid fused modules, along with 20A flex outlet plates, double pole switches and 45A cooker connection units.

Choosing Fused Connection Units & Spurs

Pick a spur by the appliance it feeds, then by where it is fitted.

Switched, unswitched, neon and flex outlet

A switched spur such as the SF6300PC adds an on/off switch to the fuse, while the CU6000NF is an unswitched unit with the fuse alone. A neon shows when the circuit is live, and a flex outlet lets the appliance cable enter through the plate: the PM6300NF has both, in anthracite.

RCD spurs

An RCD fused spur adds earth-leakage protection to a single appliance. The CU6RCD in white, the M6RCD in metal clad steel and the PM6RCD in anthracite are all 30mA Type A units, and each one resets itself after a power outage. The CU6RCD trips in 40ms and needs a mounting box at least 35mm deep.

Outdoor, metal clad and Grid

For an outside wall, the OP63N and OP6N are IP66 and IK06 polycarbonate units with a transparent lid, and the OP63N has multiple 20mm cable entries. Metal clad spurs such as the M6300 come complete with a back box. For a Grid plate, the GDM011U is a 13A fused module that clips into a mounting frame sold separately.

Flex outlets and cooker circuits

A 20A flex outlet plate connects an appliance cable to fixed wiring: the SF8342MW takes 3 x 2.5mm² or 2 x 4.0mm² in its terminals and is made for refrigerators, water heaters and central heating boilers. The CU8340 and SN8340 are cooker connection units with a clamp and a bottom knockout for the outgoing cable, and the FP8331NPC is a 45A double pole switch for isolating cooking appliances. Metal plates such as the FP6300PC are certified to BS 1363-4, and white moulded units such as the CU6000 to BS 1363-2. Finishes include white, anthracite, matt black, brushed and polished chrome, antique and polished brass, gunmetal, pearl, black nickel and smoked bronze.

How does a switched fused spur differ from an unswitched one?

A switched spur has an on/off switch as well as the fuse, while an unswitched spur has the fuse alone. The SF6300PC and CU6300N are switched 13A units, and the CU6000NF and M6000F are unswitched 13A spurs with a flex outlet. Choose a switched unit where the appliance should be turned off at the wall, for example for cleaning or maintenance.

What does an RCD fused spur add?

An RCD fused spur such as the CU6RCD adds 30mA residual current protection to the one appliance it feeds, on top of the fuse. The M6RCD and PM6RCD are Type A, covering AC residual current and pulsating DC, which suits IT and other equipment with electronic components. They are passive units that reset automatically after a power outage, so the appliance comes back on without anyone resetting it by hand.

Can a fused spur be fitted outside?

Yes, the OP63N switched spur and the OP6N fused spur are made for outdoor walls. The OP63N and OP6N are high impact polycarbonate with IP66 and IK06 ratings and a transparent lid, so the neon can be seen with the lid shut. Their wide cable channels take plugs with over-moulded strain reliefs, and the OP63N has multiple 20mm entries for positioning the cable run.

How deep a back box does a fused spur need?

Metal plate spurs such as the SF6300PC and CL63FBC need a mounting box at least 25mm deep. The CU6RCD RCD spur needs 35mm, and the FP8331NPC 45A double pole switch needs 47mm. Metal clad units such as the M6300 and M6000F are supplied with their own back box.

What is a 45A cooker connection unit?

A 45A cooker connection unit is the outlet plate where the cooker cable joins the fixed wiring, usually below a separate cooker switch. The CU8340 and SN8340 have large capacity terminals, a cable clamp and a bottom knockout for the outgoing cable, and both are certified to BS 5733. A 45A double pole switch such as the FP8331NPC then isolates the cooking appliances for maintenance and repairs.

What fuse goes in a fused spur?

A 13A fused spur such as the CU6000 takes a cartridge fuse sized for the appliance it feeds. The CU6000-3A is fitted with a 3A fuse, and the GDM011U Grid module is supplied with a replaceable 13A fuse. The SNMIXEDFUSE card holds three 3A, three 5A and four 13A fuses to BS 1362, so a lower rating can be fitted where the appliance calls for one.
