Contact Cleaners & Degreasers

Contact cleaners and degreasers on this page are cleaning products for electrical, electronic and mechanical maintenance. Fast drying contact cleaners sit beside a solvent-based degreaser, a switch cleaner that also lubricates, isopropanol and precision cleaners, a gas duster, a foam cleaner and an adhesive remover. Choose by the part you are cleaning, what it is made of and whether any film may stay on it afterwards.

Choosing Contact Cleaners & Degreasers

Fast drying contact cleaners

Action Can EC-90, the 701.443UK, is a 500ml rapidly evaporating electrical cleaner that needs no rinsing or wiping and removes deposits and tarnish from switches and contacts. The 701.443UK is non-conductive and safe on all metals and most rubbers, plastics and coatings. The WD-40 Specialist 701.321UK is a 400ml fast drying contact cleaner for circuit boards, switches and printers that clears oil, dirt, dust, flux residue and condensation without leaving residue.

Degreasing

The WD-40 Specialist 701.327UK fast acting degreaser is a 500ml solvent-based spray that starts working on contact, lifts grease, oil, dirt and grime without residue and rinses away easily. The 701.327UK suits hand and power tools, engines, chains, gear mechanisms and industrial machinery.

Reaching awkward places

The 701.321UK and 701.327UK have a Smart Straw for a precise or wide spray and a 360° valve that works upright or upside down. The Kontakt Chemie 701.226UK Cleaner 601 and 701.232UK Dust Off 67 HFO each come with an extension tube.

Switch cleaning with lubrication

Where a switch or relay also needs lubrication, Super 10 (701.227UK) does both jobs: it lifts tarnish and oxidisation and leaves a conductive film that protects against friction and improves current flow.

Precision cleaning and dust

For optics and fine mechanics, Kontakt IPA (701.228UK) is 99.7% isopropanol in an aerosol that evaporates completely, and Cleaner 601 (701.226UK) suits electronic components where polystyrene or polycarbonate plastics are involved. The 701.232UK Dust Off 67 HFO is a liquefied inert gas that clears dust without moisture or oil.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use a contact cleaner rather than a degreaser?

Use a contact cleaner on delicate electrical and electronic parts, and a degreaser on grease and grime from tools and machinery. The 701.443UK EC-90 and 701.321UK are fast drying contact cleaners for switches, contacts and circuit boards. The WD-40 701.327UK degreaser is solvent-based for engines, chains, gear mechanisms and industrial machinery, and it rinses away easily.

Which contact cleaner is non-conductive?

The Action Can EC-90, 701.443UK, is non-conductive. It rapidly evaporates without residue, needs no rinsing or wiping, and cleans hard to reach delicate electronic and electrical components, removing deposits and tarnish to improve conductivity in switches and contacts. The 701.443UK is safe for all metals and most rubbers, plastics and coatings.

What is the WD-40 Smart Straw?

It is the straw on the WD-40 Specialist cans that gives either a precise or a wide spray. The 701.321UK contact cleaner and the 701.327UK degreaser have it, together with a 360° valve that sprays upright or upside down. The 701.321UK is designed for cleaning delicate and hard-to-access parts in electrical and electronic equipment.

Does a switch cleaner leave anything behind?

Kontakt Super 10 does: the 701.227UK leaves a protective conductive lubricating film after removing grease, tarnish and oxidisation from contacts, switches and relays. That film resists drying and dust and protects against friction. The 701.443UK EC-90 and 701.321UK contact cleaners leave no residue at all.

What should I use to clean optics or precision instruments?

Use Kontakt IPA or Dust Off 67 HFO. The 701.228UK IPA is a 99.7% isopropanol cleaner for electronics, fine mechanics and optics that evaporates completely, and the 701.232UK Dust Off 67 HFO removes dust and loose debris from optics and precision instruments with a high pressure inert gas, leaving no residue as it is moisture and oil-free.
