Garden & Decking Lights

Garden and decking lights sit low in the landscape: recessed into boards, paving or driveways, pushed into borders on spikes, or set into walls beside steps. This Knightsbridge collection has ground and deck lights such as the LEDM09WW and LDGL9 and driveover fittings such as the WSGULED. It also holds GU10 and LED spike lights, bollards from 650mm to 1100mm, brick lights and wall guide lights.

Choosing Garden & Decking Lights

Start from the traffic the light must carry, whether footsteps, car wheels or none, then decide how it is powered.

Load ratings for ground and deck lights

Walkover fittings take foot traffic: the CAPWGU is an 88mm GU10 ground light for heavy foot traffic, and the 316WALK is rated for a 1000kg load. Where cars cross, check the driveover rating. The LEDM09WW and LEDM08WW1 deck lights take up to 1000kg at 5mph, the LDGL9 and LEDM07W up to 800kg at 5mph, and the WGULED and WSGULED are IP67 driveover lights in 304 stainless steel.

Fitting into decking

Deck boards leave little depth, so shallow fittings help. The LEDM08 series is an extra shallow recessed light supplied with an optional thermoplastic housing, and the LEDM06 mini ground lights come with three interchangeable heads and a 2m rubber cable. The 4IPB and 4IPW are small IP67 fittings that run from a 24V DC constant voltage driver on 3m of H05RN-F cable.

Lamp or built-in LED

GU10 fittings such as the 316WALK, CAPWGU and WGULED take a lamp that is not included, and on the 316WALK dimming depends on the lamp and MR16 12V lamps need a transformer. Built-in LED fittings such as the LEDGL3W and LDGL6 come ready to wire with 2m of outdoor flex and are non-dimmable.

Spikes, bollards and walls

Spike lights such as the GU10SPIKEBK and SPIKE4BL light gardens and patios, and the EXT2 and the 604mm EXT3 extension spikes raise a stainless steel spike light higher. Bollards run from the 650mm GDL2 to the 1100mm GDL3, and brick lights such as the BLED5SB and guide lights such as the LWR2G light the edges of paths.

Frequently asked questions

What are LED ground lights?

LED ground lights are recessed fittings set into paving, lawns, patios or decking that shine upwards from ground level. Built-in LED versions often come ready to wire with outdoor flex, while GU10 versions take a replaceable lamp. Check the load rating if people or vehicles will cross them. The range here includes walkover, driveover and deck-mounted ground lights.

What are drive-over ground lights?

Drive-over ground lights are recessed fittings built to carry the weight of a car, so they can light driveways and parking areas. Look for a load rating that suits the vehicles, a sturdy stainless steel top and a fitting set flush with the surface. The range here includes stainless steel driveover lights and deck lights with a drive-over rating.

What is the difference between IP65 and IP68 decking lights?

The difference is how well the light keeps out water. An IP65 rating usually means the fitting resists rain and low-pressure water jets. A second figure of seven usually covers temporary immersion, and eight covers continuous immersion under conditions the maker sets. Choose a higher figure where water may pool around the light. The range here includes IP65 deck lights and IP67 ground lights.

Can decking lights be mains powered?

Yes, many decking lights run directly from mains power, often with an integral driver and a length of outdoor cable for connection. Others run at low voltage from a separate driver or transformer. Outdoor mains wiring should follow the wiring regulations and is a job for a qualified electrician. The range here includes mains deck lights and low-voltage ground fittings.

How do you install decking lights?

Plan the layout and the cable route first, then drill holes in the deck boards to the size the fitting needs and run outdoor-rated cable beneath them. Connect the lights through a weatherproof junction box or to their driver, and check that the space under the boards suits the fitting depth. The range here includes extra shallow deck lights for tight spaces.
