Fibre Transceivers

Fibre transceivers are SFP and SFP+ modules that plug into switches, routers and servers to give them a fibre link. This page has 1G multimode and single-mode SFPs, single-fibre BiDi SFPs that work in matched pairs, and 10G SFP+ optics, mostly from Ruijie, with an AMG Systems industrial 10 Gb SFP and a Hikvision multimode SFP.

Choosing Fibre Transceivers

Match three things: the speed of the port, the type of fibre installed, and the length of the run.

1G multimode for short runs

The MINI-GBIC-SX-MM850 and NIS-GE-SFP-550M-MM850 are 1000BASE-SX modules working at 850 nm over multimode fibre with a duplex LC connector, for links of up to 550 m. The NIS-GE-SFP-550M-MM850 suits short-reach uplinks within buildings, wiring closets and server rooms.

1G single-mode, two strands

Over single-mode fibre with a duplex LC connector, the MINI-GBIC-LX-SM1310 and NIS-GE-SFP-10KM-SM1310 are 1000BASE-LX modules at 1310 nm with a 10 km reach. The MINI-GBIC-LH40-SM1310 reaches 40 km at 1310 nm, and the MINI-GBIC-ZX80-SM1550 uses a 1550 nm DFB transmitter for long-haul links of up to 80 km.

Single-fibre BiDi

A BiDi module transmits and receives on different wavelengths over one strand, so the two ends need opposite modules. The GE-SFP-LX20-SM1310-BIDI transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, and pairs with the GE-SFP-LX20-SM1550-BIDI at the remote end; both reach 20 km. The GE-SFP-LH40-SM1310-BIDI (TX 1310 nm, RX 1550 nm) and GE-SFP-LH40-SM1550-BIDI (TX 1550 nm, RX 1310 nm) are the 40 km equivalents, and the NIS-GE-SFP-20KM-SM1550-BIDI is a further 20 km module that transmits at 1550 nm.

10G SFP+ and SFP modules

For 10 Gigabit ports, the XG-SFP-SR-MM850 is a 10GBASE-SR multimode module reaching 300 m over OM3, the XG-SFP-LR-SM1310 is a 10GBASE-LR single-mode module for 10 km, and the XG-SFP-ER-SM1550 reaches 40 km at 1550 nm. The AMG S18941 is a 10 Gb single-mode SFP for about 10 km at 1310 nm, rated for industrial temperatures of −40 °C to +75 °C.

What is the speed difference in SFP vs SFP+?

SFP modules are typically 1 Gigabit, running at 1.25Gb/s, while SFP+ modules carry 10 Gigabit, so match the module to the port's speed. The Ruijie MINI-GBIC-LX-SM1310 is a 1000BASE-LX SFP at 1.25Gbps, while the XG-SFP-LR-SM1310 and XG-SFP-SR-MM850 are 10G SFP+ modules. The AMG S18941 is a 10 Gb single-mode module in SFP form.

What is a BiDi SFP and does it need a matching module?

A BiDi SFP sends and receives over a single fibre strand on two wavelengths, and yes, the far end needs the opposite module. The GE-SFP-LX20-SM1310-BIDI transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, and pairs with the GE-SFP-LX20-SM1550-BIDI, which transmits at 1550 nm; together they cover links of up to 20 km.

Do I need a single-mode or a multimode SFP?

Match the module to the fibre already installed. On multimode fibre, the MINI-GBIC-SX-MM850 reaches 550 m at 850 nm and the XG-SFP-SR-MM850 300 m over OM3. Single-mode modules cover longer runs, such as the MINI-GBIC-LX-SM1310 at 10 km, the MINI-GBIC-LH40-SM1310 at 40 km and the MINI-GBIC-ZX80-SM1550 at 80 km.

What is an industrial SFP transceiver?

An industrial SFP transceiver is rated for a wider operating temperature range than a commercial one, such as −40 °C to +75 °C. The AMG S18941 is a 10 Gb single-mode SFP rated for an industrial −40 °C to +75 °C, with a 1310 nm DFB transmitter, a duplex LC connector and a 10 km reach. By comparison, the Ruijie XG-SFP-ER-SM1550 has a commercial operating grade of 0 °C to +70 °C.

What does DDM or DOM mean on an SFP?

DDM or DOM is digital diagnostic monitoring, which reports live optical and temperature values from the module. On the XG-SFP-ER-SM1550 it reports optical power, temperature and other diagnostic metrics for troubleshooting, and on the NIS-GE-SFP-550M-MM850 it reports optical power, temperature and alarms. The MINI-GBIC-ZX80-SM1550 and GE-SFP-LH40-SM1550-BIDI support it too.
