Maglocks

A maglock is an electromagnetic door lock: a magnet on the frame holds a steel armature plate on the door while power is applied. It has no moving bolt, and it releases when the access controller, an exit button or a fire alarm cuts the supply. Holding forces here include the 136kg STP-EM150 micro lock, the 275kg STP-EM01 and the 545kg STP-EM10.

Match it to the door: a 275kg slim lock such as the STP STEALTH01 is described as sufficient for most indoor doors, and a 545kg standard lock such as the STP-EM20 is for doors needing more holding force. For gates, the STP-EXT1800 holds up to 818Kg. Fit the armature squarely, since a misaligned plate holds less.

Fail-safe: a maglock holds while powered and releases when power is removed, which is why it suits escape routes wired to a fire alarm. STP models such as the STP-EM01 list fail-safe operation, power to lock, and the CDVI C3S11 and I400SR unlock on loss of power. Pair the lock with an exit button or break-glass so the door can be released from inside.

It reports its own state to the access control system through relay contacts. Lock-monitored models such as the STP-EM20 and STEALTH20 give an LED and a signal when the lock is engaged, and DS models such as the STP-EM20DS add door status contacts that show whether the door is open or closed. Unmonitored models, such as the STP-EM10, simply hold the door.

The ASSA ABLOY AA1354 mini shearlock is rated at 1500kg shear load.

The CDVI P300RP has one 300 kg monitored magnet in a 400 mm profile, the CDVI P600EVO two 300kg magnets in a 700mm handle, and the STP-PH800 two slim maglocks with concealed wiring. Yes, where the lock has been fire tested for that use. The STP-EM01-FIRE, STP-EM10-FIRE and STP-EM20DS-FIRE are FD30 and FD60 tested, and the CDVI C3S11 is fire tested to EN 1634 for 30 minutes. Wire the lock to release on the fire alarm, and follow the fitting instructions supplied with the door and the lock.

A regulated 12V or 24V DC supply sized for the lock current, usually with battery backup so the door stays secure through a short mains failure. The STP-EM10 draws 500mA at 12V or 250mA at 24V, and the CDVI C3S11 about 480 mA at 12 V. Selectable models such as the STEALTH01 are set to match the supply voltage.
