The Advanced MX-5401D is an MxPro 5 series 1-4 loop addressable fire alarm control panel, supplied with one loop card fitted in the deep enclosure.

The MxPro 5 platform is expandable from one to four loops, and this order code is the deep steel enclosure build of the Apollo XP95/Discovery and Hochiki ESP protocol variant. It ships with four on-board 1 Amp programmable sounder circuits, 20 programmable zonal LEDs with slide-in labels, 25 system LEDs and four programmable function buttons. Behind the front plate sit dual flash-based processors with a real-time clock and trace diagnostics.

They drive a white backlit 240 x 64 graphical LCD and a tactile alphanumeric keypad. Cause-and-effect programming can be done on site at the panel or from a PC. The deep enclosure is the one to choose when the standby battery calculation runs past what the standard box will hold, or when the panel needs room for option cards and extra terminations.

  • Networking and monitoring: True peer-to-peer networking to other MxPro 5 and MxPro 4 panels, remote terminals, BMS or graphics. That runs over an optional MXP-503 standard or MXP-509 fault-tolerant network card. An on-board Ethernet port carries AdvancedLive in the UK and Ireland.
  • Commissioning tools: Auto-learn, loop detection and an on-board scope facility, a 5000-entry event and diagnostic log plus 500 fire events, and programming from the keypad or from PC-NeT-022 configuration software over USB or RS232.

Use cases

This is a commercial addressable panel for schools, offices, care settings, retail and light industrial sites. It also suits any scheme that starts on one loop and is expected to grow, since loops two to four are added later on cards rather than by replacing the panel. The deep enclosure earns its place in three cases.

The first is where the standby calculation demands batteries larger than 18Ah. The second is where option cards are going in behind the front plate. The third is where a lot of field cabling has to be terminated in the box.

Where none of that applies, the standard-depth order code is the cheaper and shallower choice. This variant is supplied for Apollo XP95/Discovery and Hochiki ESP devices, so confirm the detector protocol on the drawings before ordering. Treat the Nittan and Argus Vega panels as genuinely different products rather than options.

Who this is for

For the installer: MX-5401D is the deep-enclosure, Apollo XP95/Discovery and Hochiki ESP build of the MxPro 5 1-4 loop panel, with one loop card fitted. Check both halves of that before you order, because the suffix carries the protocol as well as the box.

MX-5401 is the same panel in the standard 120 mm enclosure. MX-5401ND is the deep Nittan Evolution version. MX-5401N, a different product again, is Nittan in the standard box.

The deep case is 475 x 450 x 190 mm and takes standby batteries up to 24 V 45Ah against 18Ah standard, with 30 top, 11 top-rear and 3 bottom 20 mm knockouts. Mains is 200-240 V at up to 1.4 A, and the charger is 2 A temperature compensated. The 5 A total output budget has to cover loop current, the four 1 A sounder circuits and the 24 V 500 mA auxiliary between them.

Extra loops are cards, not panels: MXP-568 for Apollo, Hochiki and Argus Vega, MXP-567 for Nittan.

In plain English: this is the control panel for a commercial addressable fire alarm system. It is the grey steel box on the wall that the detectors and call points report to, that sounds the alarm, and that tells you where the fire is.

Deep enclosure means a physically thicker box, chosen so that larger back-up batteries fit inside it. Addressable means each detector has its own identity, so the panel names the room rather than just the zone. It is not a domestic product and it is not a plug-in item.

It is designed, installed and commissioned by a fire alarm engineer, and the detectors have to match the protocol the panel was ordered for.

Buying this in the UK

  • The suffix matters more than anything else on this page. MX-5401D is deep enclosure plus Apollo XP95/Discovery and Hochiki ESP. If the drawings call for Nittan Evolution, Argus Vega or Apollo Soteria, that is a different order code, not an option on this one.
  • Advanced lists this panel as approved to EN54-2 and EN54-4 with the amendment years quoted in full in the specification table above, and lists EN 54-13:2017 as PENDING. If a specification calls for EN 54-13, get that confirmed in writing before you commit.
  • One loop card is included. Loops two, three and four are ordered separately as loop driver cards, so price the final loop count, not the starting one.
  • Advanced quotes a 3-year warranty on this range.
  • AdvancedLive panel monitoring is available in the UK and Ireland only and uses the on-board Ethernet port, so no extra card is needed for it, unlike panel-to-panel networking which does need MXP-503 or MXP-509.
