About this product

The Apollo 58002-300APO is a Discovery base sounder for addressable fire alarm systems. It fits an XPERT 8 base, so it suits installers adding sound at a detector point or as a stand-alone device with a base cap. It offers 15 tone pairs and 7 volume settings, and its communication is Discovery and CoreProtocol compatible.

Key features

  • Adds sound without a separate wall unit – used with an Apollo addressable detector, or stand-alone with a base cap
  • Choose the sound for the building – 15 tone pairs and 7 volume settings
  • Strong output at its top setting – the highest level is nominally 95 dB(A) at 1m
  • Sound groups through the panel – software defined group addressing with up to 16 group addresses
  • Helps a loop survive a short – built-in isolator (when used with XPERT 8 Base)
  • Checks its own sound – a unique acoustic self test
  • Set at the device – set-up and testing of device at point of installation

For installers

  • Power: loop supply of 17 V - 35 V dc. Quiescent current 0.7 mA, alarm current with sounder on 6.85 mA.
  • Mounting: fits the XPERT 8 Base, Part No. SA5000-20X, sold separately. Size 110 mm diameter x 46 mm deep.
  • Cabling: addressed with an XPERT Universal Address Card (1 to 126). The Grub screw must be engaged to reach the IP ratings.
  • Compatibility: Discovery and CoreProtocol (compatible). Features are panel dependent, so check the panel's documentation.
  • Standards: IP21C rating approved as per EN54-3. Vibration, impact and shock to EN 54-3, EN 54-17: 2005.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need a detector fitted?

No. It can be used with an Apollo addressable detector, or as a stand-alone device with a base cap sold separately.

Which base does it fit?

The XPERT 8 Base, Part No. SA5000-20X, sold separately. The base is also needed to make use of the Short Circuit Isolator.

How loud is it?

Up to nominally 95 dB(A) at 1m, at the highest of seven levels. The lower levels Volume 2 and Volume 1 are not EN 54-3 approved.

Will it work on any addressable panel?

Usually yes if the panel uses Discovery or CoreProtocol. Features are panel dependent, so check the panel maker's details.

Can it go outdoors?

Treat it as an indoor product. It is approved as IP21C as per EN54-3, and the declared IP34 rating applies only when a Detector or Cap is fitted, below ceiling level.

How is the volume set?

During commissioning, through the fire control panel or at the device. With the panel in set-up, the engineer sets each device using a magnetic wand.

Apollo 58002-300APO addressable base sounder, angled view from above

Apollo Discovery Addressable Base Sounder, Loop Powered, 95 dB(A), White 58002-300APO

What this base sounder does

A base sounder puts the alarm sound in the ceiling base, under the detector. This Apollo unit therefore gives a sounding point at a position that may already need a detector, with no separate wall device.

It takes its power from the loop, the single cable circuit that links an addressable system's devices. Where no detector is wanted, a base cap closes it off and it runs as a stand-alone sounder.

How it works

  • Tone pairs: each pair has a primary tone for evacuation and a secondary tone that may be used for alerting or warning of a possible evacuation.
  • Group control: the panel can act on one sounder, a group or all of them. That is how a building can sound different messages in different areas, where the panel allows it.
  • Short-circuit isolator: an isolator cuts off a shorted section of loop so the rest can keep working. Here it depends on the base, so choose the XPERT 8 Base if you want it.
  • Protocol: the protocol is the language a panel and its devices use, and a device on the wrong one will not work.

Where to use it

It suits ceilings on addressable systems where a wall sounder would be awkward or unwelcome. The housing is white flame-retardant polycarbonate, which suits white ceilings.

Treat it as an indoor device. The approved rating is IP21C and the higher declared rating has conditions attached.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Sound and distance: sound falls off with distance and through doors. Whoever designs the system should work out sounder numbers from room sizes, then measure on site.
  • Lower volume levels: the two lowest settings are not EN 54-3 approved, so avoid them where the job has to meet that standard.
  • Current and loop loading: the alarm current drops with the volume setting, so a lower level puts less load on the loop. Add the figure for the chosen level to your loop calculation.
  • EN54-3 tones: not every tone in the table carries the EN54-3 star, so pick from the starred ones where compliance matters.

Installing it

  • Setting volume on site: put the control panel into set-up, walk the devices with a magnetic wand, then save the settings at the panel.
  • Grub screw: engage it on every unit, because the IP ratings depend on it.
  • Selecting a tone: this is done during commissioning, to suit local regulations or customs, so agree it before the visit.

Planning your system

Allow for an XPERT 8 Base at every position, plus an XPERT Universal Address Card. Add a white base cap, Part No. 45681-292, wherever no detector is fitted.

Check the control panel before ordering, because group control and other features depend on it. Where a detector will be fitted, XP95, Discovery and Soteria detectors are covered.
