About this product

The Apollo 45681-244APO is an AlarmSense base for mounting AlarmSense detectors that do not need an integral sounder, on a system controlled by an AlarmSense fire control panel. It suits installers working on AlarmSense zones. Electronic circuitry lets a fault be signalled if a detector is removed without authorisation.

Key features

  • Tells you when a head is taken away – a fault can be signalled if a detector is removed without authorisation
  • Base wiring – the base itself is polarity insensitive, but AlarmSense call points are polarity sensitive, so keep line polarity consistent
  • Simple loop-through wiring – incoming and outgoing cables share the L1 IN (+ve Line) and L2 (-ve Line) terminals
  • Room for a repeat light – a remote indicator can be connected to each base
  • Copes with cold and heat – operating temperature -40 ºC to + 80ºC
  • Keeps the zone in service – continues to work during unauthorised removal of detectors

For installers

  • Power: two wire supply, polarity insensitive, 9 V - 33 V.
  • Mounting: 100 mm diameter. Weight 55 g. Housing in white flame-retardant polycarbonate. Not suitable for outdoor use.
  • Cabling: L1 IN (+ve Line) and L2 (-ve Line) for in and out. Do not connect any field wiring to the L1 OUT terminal.
  • Compatibility: only with purpose designed AlarmSense fire control panels. Do not use Series 65 detectors on AlarmSense systems.
  • Standards: check the approvals you need against Apollo's documentation before specifying it.

Frequently asked questions

Which detectors fit this base?

AlarmSense detectors. The range is not compatible with other ranges of detectors.

Can Series 65 detectors be used on it?

No. Do not use Series 65 detectors on AlarmSense systems, because they could cause severe system malfunction even if they seem to work at first.

Will it work with any conventional panel?

No. It can only be used with purpose designed AlarmSense fire control panels.

Does polarity matter when wiring it?

At the base, no: its two wire supply is polarity insensitive. AlarmSense call points on the same zone are polarity sensitive, so keep line polarity consistent. The remote indicator terminals are marked +ve and -ve.

Why is L1 OUT left empty?

Because field wiring must not be connected to it. Incoming and outgoing cables both use L1 IN and L2.

Can it be used outdoors?

No. It is not suitable for outdoor use.

Apollo AlarmSense Base for Two Wire Fire Detectors 45681-244APO

What this base does

A detector base is the fixed part of a fire detector. The cables end here, and the detector head then fits on to it.

This Apollo base belongs to one closed family, so every part of the job has to be AlarmSense. It is the plain version, without a sounder or a visual indicator built in.

How it works

  • One pair of wires: Apollo designed AlarmSense so detection and alarm products connect to the same pair of supply wires.
  • Head monitoring: when a head comes off, the base presents a small repeating load across the line. That pulsed load is how the panel can tell the head has gone.
  • Polarity insensitive: this applies to the base only. AlarmSense call points on the same zone are polarity sensitive, so keep line polarity consistent.

Where to use it

It suits indoor positions on an AlarmSense zone where a head is wanted without local sound. Where a position also needs to sound, Apollo has separate sounder bases.

Allow for humidity in plant rooms and unheated areas, because condensation and icing are ruled out.

What the figures mean in practice

  • The wide voltage range: useful at the far end of a long zone, where voltage drops along the cable. Check the actual figure at the last device.
  • Temperature range: that range is for the base. The head fitted to it has its own limit, and the lower of the two applies.
  • Typical figures: values are typical at 24 V, 25ºC and 50% RH, where RH means relative humidity.

Installing it

  • Test the cable first: do insulation checks before AlarmSense devices are connected.
  • Cable screen: use the spare terminal to carry the screen if your cable has one.
  • End of the zone: fit the end of line resistor your panel maker recommends. The wrong value can cause a fault.

Planning your system

Start with the panel, because this base only works on an AlarmSense panel such as the AlarmSense control panel from C-TEC.

Order one base per position, then add a head such as the AlarmSense smoke detector. Check the protocol before mixing in other detectors.
