About this product

The Apollo 45681-393APO is a Discovery fire alarm sounder beacon base with isolator, for giving audible and visual warning of fire on an addressable system. It suits installers working on Discovery loops. It takes a detector or a cap, has seven volume levels and reaches 90 ± 3 dB(A) at most.

Key features

  • Three jobs at one point – a mounting base for Discovery detectors, a sounder and a visual indicator
  • Choose the warning to suit the site – 15 evacuation tones and 15 secondary or alert tones
  • Set the loudness to the room – seven volume levels
  • Sound and light can act apart – independent control of sounder and visual indicator
  • Helps contain a wiring fault – a short-circuit isolator, with isolator status information
  • Red flash for a visual cue – visual indicator beacon with a red flash
  • Checks itself – a unique acoustic self-test

For installers

  • Power: 17 - 28 V dc, polarity sensitive. At 24 V dc: quiescent current 450 µA, power-up surge current 1.2 mA, device operated at maximum volume 8 mA.
  • Mounting: 115 mm diameter x 38 mm height, weight 168 g, designed to IP21D.
  • Compatibility: Discovery (CoreProtocol compatible). Refer to your chosen panel manufacturer for system compatibility and feature support.
  • Standards: EN 54-3 for the sounder and EN54-17 for the isolator, plus CPR, VNIIPO and CCMG.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used without a detector?

Yes. Fit a cap and it runs as a stand-alone alarm device.

Does it work on an XP95 panel?

Check with your chosen panel manufacturer first. It is a Discovery device, with CoreProtocol compatible, and system compatibility rests with the panel manufacturer.

How loud is it?

Its maximum sound output at 90º is 90 ± 3 dB(A). The seven levels go down to 60 dB(A), and that lowest level is outside of the standard EN 54.

How is the volume set?

At the device. The engineer sets the panel to Setup and walks the system with a magnetic wand, Part No. 29650-001.

Which tones meet EN 54?

The Apollo evacuate tone, medium sweep, Dutch slow whoop and DIN tone are EN 54 compliant, so pick from those where EN 54 applies.

What colour does the beacon flash?

Red. It is a visual indicator beacon with a red flash.

Apollo 45681-393APO discovery sounder beacon base with isolator, open base view

Apollo Discovery Fire Alarm Sounder Beacon Base with Isolator 45681-393APO

What this base does

This Apollo base puts a sounder and a light where a detector base would go, so one point can both detect and warn. The panel drives both over the Discovery loop.

With a cap in place of a detector it acts purely as an alarm device, which is handy where a warning is needed but detection is not.

How it works

  • Normal operation: the base normally switches sounder and indicator together for an alert or evacuation signal. The panel can also switch them apart.
  • Groups: devices are assigned to groups at commissioning and the information is stored in each device, so one command switches them all.
  • Primary and secondary tones: one evacuation tone is selected at commissioning, and it comes with a secondary tone for alerting or warning of a possible evacuation.

Where to use it

It is designed for indoor use, and IP21D is a low rating for moisture and dust. Clean, dry rooms suit it.

The lowest volume level gives a very local warning for staff in places such as nurse stations in hospitals. That level is outside of the standard, so treat it as a local signal and not the main alarm.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Current at top volume: the operated current is quoted at maximum volume, so it is the figure to use when checking how the loop copes with every device sounding.
  • Sound output: sound drops with distance and through doors, so space devices to the levels your system design calls for.
  • International tones: the tones include those required by Dutch, Swedish, German, Australian, New Zealand and North American standards as well as the UK, so pick the tone for where the system is installed.

Planning your system

The job also needs a detector or a cap on top, a panel that runs the full Discovery protocol, and the magnetic wand if volumes will be set at the point of installation. Ask the panel maker which features it supports.

See the wider Apollo sounders range for wall-mounted and base options, and compare each against your panel before ordering.

Standards explained

  • EN 54-3: the standard for fire alarm sounders.
  • EN54-17: the standard for short-circuit isolators, which applies to the isolator in this base.
  • CPR: the Construction Products Regulation, which covers fire safety products built into buildings.
