About this product

The Apollo 55000-296APO is a multi-tone weatherproof open-area sounder beacon for giving audible and flashing warning outdoors on XP95 or Discovery systems. It suits installers covering outdoor areas from an addressable loop. It is rated IP 66, runs from the loop, and has three tones in a red body.

Key features

  • Made for outdoor open areas – Outdoor (Type B) with an IP rating of 66
  • Sound and light in one unit – a sounder beacon, with a beacon flash rate of 1Hz
  • No separate power run – powered directly from the loop with no external power supply
  • Three tones to choose from – Apollo, Slow Whoop or DIN
  • Set the loudness to the site – two volume settings, 92dB(A) and 100dB(A), to within ±3dB(A)
  • Sounds as one – synchronised so tones from different sounders do not merge into one signal
  • Control several at once – individual & group addressing

For installers

  • Power: 18-28V DC (polarity sensitive). At 24V: switch-on surge 1.2mA for <1 sec, quiescent 330µA, operated 9mA.
  • Mounting: fitted with four screws, with an additional square backbox. 110mm x 110 x 113 (L x W x H), 294g.
  • Cabling: three drill centre points for cable entry are marked on the upper and lower face of the backbox.
  • Compatibility: will operate only with control equipment using the Apollo XP95 or Discovery protocol. Not compatible with systems using Discovery sounders.
  • Standards: all three tones comply with EN54-3:2001.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be fitted outdoors?

Yes. This code is the Outdoor (Type B) weatherproof version, with an IP rating of 66 and limits of -20ºC to +70ºC.

Does the 55000-296APO have a built-in isolator?

No. The versions with isolator are other part numbers, and this code has no isolator.

Which fire panels does it work with?

Control equipment using the Apollo XP95 or Discovery protocol, and only those. Its features need a control panel with the appropriate software.

Can it go on a system that already has Discovery sounders?

No. These devices are not compatible with systems using Discovery sounders.

How loud is it?

100dB(A) at the higher setting and 92dB(A) at the lower one, to within ±3dB(A).

How many can go on a loop?

Many panels can drive up to 20 sounders per loop on average. The real limit comes from a loop loading calculation using the Apollo Loop Calculator.

Apollo 55000-296APO multi-tone weatherproof open-area sounder beacon, front view

Apollo Fire Alarm Sounder Beacon, Multi-Tone Open-Area, Weatherproof, Red 55000-296APO

What this sounder beacon does

A sounder beacon gives two warnings at once, a loud tone and a flashing light, so it reaches people who may miss one of them. This Apollo model is the weatherproof type for outdoor open areas.

Because open areas can have more than one unit in earshot, keeping them in step matters as much as the sound level.

How it works

  • Tone choice: DIL switches on the device select the tone. A DIL switch is a small bank of on and off switches.
  • Staying in step: the control panel sends a set address to line them up, and Apollo recommends doing so at ten minute intervals.
  • Group control: a group address lets one command run several units, though each returns data only on its individual address.

Where to use it

It suits outdoor positions within its temperature limits, from cold winter nights to hot summer days. IP 66 means dust tight and protected against powerful water jets.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Address ranges: using a group address means keeping the individual address between 1 and 111. Outside that, the unit reports a fault value of 4.
  • Sound level: outdoors, wind and background noise affect how far a tone carries, so your system design sets how many units each area needs.
  • Loop load: the operated current is the figure that matters when every unit runs at once, and the calculator settles the count.

Planning your system

The job also needs an addressable control panel on the right protocol, plus loop cabling to each position. See the wider range of Apollo sounders for indoor and base options, and check each against your panel.

Isolators split a loop into sections so a short circuit takes out only part of it. Plan where they go, since this code has no isolator.

Standards and ratings explained

  • EN54-3: the standard for fire alarm sounders, which applies to the tones. Check the approvals you need for the beacon against the unit's documentation before specifying it.
