What this access control keypad is for

A keypad lets people through a door by code, with no cards or keys to issue or lose. This CDVI keypad is the entry point only: it reads the code and passes it on, while a door controller decides who may enter.

It suits access control installers adding code entry to a system, on doors where a tough, vandal-resistant unit makes sense.

How does a Wiegand keypad work?

Wiegand is a long-standing way of sending a code down wires from a reader to a controller. It uses two data lines, called Data 0 and Data 1.

  • Output format: you pick the format in the programming menu, so match it to what your controller reads. ISO track 2 is a format borrowed from magnetic stripe cards.
  • Keypad mode: CDVI offers decimal (base 10), hexadecimal (base 16) and ARK keypad modes. Set the mode your controller expects.
  • Backlight: the illumination time can be set in seconds, or kept on all the time with "00". That choice helps at dark entrances.

Where to use it

The Zamak cast alloy (a zinc-based metal) body and IK10 rating suit doors where the keypad may take knocks or deliberate abuse, such as communal entrances, plant rooms and staff doors. Its -25°C to 70°C working range covers unheated areas.

IP64 covers dust and splashing water, so give it some shelter from driving rain or hose-down cleaning.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 4 to 6 digits: a longer code takes much longer to guess. Choose the length to suit how many people use the door.
  • 100mA: a small load, but add it to the controller's supply budget with everything else on that output.
  • 140 cm height: this keeps the keys easy to read and reach for most users.

Installing it

  • Wiring: red is 12V DC, black is 0V, green is Data 0 and white is Data 1. Brown is buzzer, blue is clock and grey is 0V common. As a rule, clock is a timing line and 0V common is a shared return, so check both against your controller's wiring.
  • Cable run: shielded twisted pairs help protect the data lines from electrical noise. Check the run length to the controller before you start.
  • Fixing order: mark and drill the holes, fit the backplate, and pass the cable through its hole. Hook the keypad on from above, fix it with the Torx screw, then apply the screw cap.
  • Programming: with power off, turn the switch to ON, then restore power. One beep confirms each entry and four beeps signal an error. Turn the switch to OFF to finish.
  • Keypad beeps: these can be turned off for quiet areas such as offices or care settings.

Planning your system

Beyond the keypad and its door controller, the job needs a lock or strike for the door, a 12 V DC supply, and shielded cable.

Standards and ratings explained

  • IP64: dust tight, and protected against splashing water from any direction.
  • IK10: the highest common impact rating, meaning the housing withstands a 20 joule blow.
  • CE and UKCA: the maker's declaration that the product meets the European and UK rules that apply to it.
  • DEEE and RoHS: DEEE is the French name for WEEE, the rules on recycling electrical waste. RoHS limits hazardous substances in electronics.
