Frequently asked questions

Is this a 600kg maglock?

No. It is rated 2 x 300kg, which means two 300kg magnets in one body, one for each door leaf.

Does it stay locked in a power cut?

Only while its own power supply stays on, because it is fail safe. As a rule, it stays held through a mains cut only if a battery-backed supply is powering it, and on an escape route it must still release, usually through a fire alarm link and a release device. Check this with whoever holds the building's fire strategy.

Can it be used outdoors?

No. It is for internal use only, and it is rated IP42.

How much current does it draw?

590mA @ 12Vdc or 285mA @ 24Vdc.

Can it report door status?

Yes. It has live status monitoring, with 2 relays and NO/NC contacts.

Are brackets needed?

It depends on your doors and frame. The LD3 L-bracket and the Z3Z4Z5 Z-bracket are its accessories, so choose by the layout of your doors and frame.

CDVI C3S12 double surface maglock, magnet faces angled view

CDVI 300kg Maglock, Double Surface, 2 x 300kg, Monitored, Fail Safe C3S12

What this double maglock is for

A pair of doors needs a magnet for each leaf. Fitting both in one body keeps the frame head tidy and means one lock to mount and wire.

This one suits access control installers on internal double doors, such as corridors and office entrances.

How it works

  • Two magnets, one body: each coil becomes a magnet when powered and pulls its armature plate on the door leaf firmly against it.
  • Fail safe: a magnet only holds while it has power, so both leaves are free once the lock loses power.
  • Monitored: 2 relays give NO (normally open) and NC (normally closed) contacts, which can be wired to controller inputs to show lock status.

The access control system guide explains how fail safe and fail secure locks differ, and why that choice comes first on any door.

Where to use it

It is for internal use only, and IP42 fits that. Its -20°C to 60°C range covers normal indoor conditions.

On an escape route, settle how a fail safe lock will release before fixing it, because it can change the wiring and the parts you need. Check the plan with whoever holds the building's fire strategy.

For a single door, CDVI's single version is the C3S11.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 2 x 300kg: each magnet resists a straight pull of 300kg with its armature flat against it. Poor alignment on either leaf reduces that leaf's hold, and the frame must be strong enough to carry the load.
  • 590mA @ 12Vdc or 285mA @ 24Vdc: a maglock draws this current for as long as the doors are locked. Running at 24Vdc roughly halves it, which makes long cable runs easier.
  • 500 x 43 x 26 mm and 3.55kg: this is a long, heavy body, so check the frame head has the length and the strength for it.

Installing it

  • Armature plates: each measures 185 x 38 x 11 mm and fixes to a door leaf, so check the doors can take the fixings.
  • Brackets by code: The LD3 L-bracket suits double surface mount 300kg locks, and the Z3Z4Z5 Z-bracket is the other option. Compare your door layout with the wider range of maglock brackets and accessories before ordering.
  • Wiring a maglock: as a rule, take the power pair through the release device, then take each relay pair back to a monitoring input.

Planning your system

A complete pair of doors also needs a controller, a way out and a 12-24Vdc supply sized for the constant draw. Most sites add an exit button on the secure side and an emergency door release at the doors.

The magnetic door lock guide covers holding force, air gap and frame strength in more depth, and CDVI magnetic locks shows the maker's other models.

Ratings explained

  • IP42: the first digit means protected against small solid objects, and the second means limited protection from dripping water.
  • IK10: this is an impact rating, and the top of the common IK scale.
  • 100kg pre-load: this relates to FR regulation NFS 61-937, so check what applies to your UK project.
