CDVI Emergency Door Release, Resettable, Double Pole EM201

What this device is for

An electronic lock has no handle to turn if its control system stops working. An emergency door release gives people a physical way to cut the lock's power from the door itself.

This one suits installers fitting access controlled doors inside a building, and managers who would rather reset a device with a key than keep spare glass.

How it works

  • Press to release: pressing the front drops the plate, and that triggers the micro switch inside.
  • Stays released: the plate remains dropped until someone resets it, so the door does not lock again by accident.
  • Double pole: it switches two separate circuits at once, each with its own NO (normally open), COM (common) and NC (normally closed) terminals.
  • Volt-free: the relay contacts carry no voltage of their own, so they simply open or close whatever circuit is wired to them.

Where to use it

It is generally fitted where there is no other manual way to permanently release fail safe locks. It is for internal use only, so fit it indoors.

On an escape route this device is usually one part of the design, alongside a fire alarm link and a fail safe lock. Whoever holds the building's fire strategy should decide where it goes and how it is wired.

Installing it

  • Fixing: it is surface mounted and takes the UK back-box format, so plan the position against your back box.
  • Space: allow for 86 mm x 86 mm x 50 mm on the wall.
  • Wiring: in most installations one pole breaks the lock's power, and the other can signal the controller that the release has been used.

Planning your system

This release controls a lock but does not lock anything itself. A complete door also needs the lock, such as a fail safe maglock, and a way to leave in normal use, such as an exit button.

CDVI's accessory for accidental presses is the MX-03 protective cover. The reset key is the EMKEY, which is also useful as a spare.

The access control system guide explains how a manual release fits with fail safe locks and the fire alarm. You can compare other types across emergency door release units, or see the full CDVI range.

Ratings explained

  • IP24: the first digit means protected against objects the size of a finger, and the second means protected against splashing water. This model is still for internal use only.
