Face Recognition & Biometric

Biometric access control identifies a person by face or fingerprint, alone or together with a card, PIN or QR code. This page covers face recognition terminals and face modules for turnstiles, fingerprint readers, keypad readers that combine PIN, card and finger, desktop enrolment stations for registering users, and the control boards that hold fingerprint templates for connected readers. Check how a unit connects to your access control system before choosing.

Choosing Face Recognition & Biometric

Decide whether users will present a face, a finger or the two together, then choose between a standalone unit and a reader for a wider system.

Face recognition terminals

Face terminals such as the DS-K1T671TMW have a 7-inch touch screen, recognise faces from 0.3m to 3m and hold up to 50,000 faces and cards, and the DS-K1T680D-E1 has an 8-inch screen with capacity for 100,000 faces and cards. The DS-K1T344MBFWX-E1 is a 4.5in IP65 terminal that adds fingerprint, card, PIN and QR authentication and can run as a single-door controller. The DHI-ASI6213S-PW-V1 holds 6,000 faces and 10,000 cards and connects over Wi-Fi or PoE.

Fingerprint and multi-factor readers

For outdoor doors, the HON-BEW2-OAPB fingerprint terminal is rated IP67 with IK09 impact protection, and the DS-K1T805MBFWX is IP65 and IK08 with card, fingerprint, PIN and Bluetooth. The 5002-0456 DIGIgarde PLUS combines PIN, card and finger in one IP65 reader that can work standalone or with an access control unit. The BIOCS stores 9500 fingerprints and connects over RS485 and Wiegand.

Enrolment and control boards

The DS-K1F600U-D6E-F enrollment station captures face, fingerprint and card data locally or remotely, and the DS-K1F820-F is a USB fingerprint recorder with no-driver plug-and-play. The 7255489 control board supports the fingerprint database for one or two biometric readers. The IEVO-MB50KPOE board interface supports two readers and up to 50,000 fingerprints, with Power over Ethernet.

Fitting it into your system

Check the output your controller expects: the DS-K5671-ZH has built-in IO or Wiegand output for third-party turnstiles, and the A05C supports OSDP and Wiegand. SIGMA readers such as the SIGMALPROX work with the Pro-Watch security suite, where biometric templates are enrolled and managed. Hikvision supplies the most products here.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose face recognition or a fingerprint reader?

Face recognition gives contactless entry, a fingerprint reader needs a finger on the sensor, and some terminals offer face and fingerprint together. Face terminals such as the DS-K1T342MFWX-E1 recognise a user in under 0.2 seconds at 0.3m to 1.5m. The Signo 25BNKS-10-000000 uses multispectral imaging to read wet, dry, dirty or worn fingerprints, and the DS-K1T671TMFW handles face and fingerprint.

Do face recognition terminals work if people wear masks?

Some do. The DS-K1T342MFWX-E1 supports face with mask recognition, and the CDVI FTC1000 can recognise users even when they are wearing a PPE mask. The DS-K1T671M and DS-K1T671TMFW work the other way, with a forced mask wearing alert that gives a voice reminder when a recognised face has no mask.

How are users enrolled on a biometric system?

Users are enrolled at a terminal or a desktop enrolment device that captures their face, fingerprint or card. The DS-K1F600U-D6E-F enrollment station has a 3.97-inch touch screen and captures data locally or remotely. The DS-K1F820-F is a USB fingerprint recorder that uploads fingerprint data to the controller. The 7255497 admin reader is a USB-powered device for fingerprint registration.

Can a biometric reader be fitted outdoors?

Yes, if it has a suitable IP rating. The HON-BEW2-OAPB fingerprint terminal is rated IP67 with IK09 impact protection and is made for outdoor installation. Face units such as the DS-K1T344MBWX-QRE1 and DS-K5671-ZV are IP65, as is the A05C, which supports face, Bluetooth, RFID and QR code entry. The BIOCS, at IP54, is for internal use.

Can a biometric reader control a door on its own?

Yes, several can work standalone. The TDSi 5002-0456 can control access to a single door by itself or be integrated into a large scale access control system. The DS-K1T344MBFWX-E1 can operate as a single-door controller with a 12 VDC lock output. The FTC1000 works as a stand-alone or Wiegand biometric solution.

Can face recognition be used on a turnstile?

Yes, face modules such as the DS-K5671-ZH are made to be installed on a turnstile, with built-in IO or Wiegand output to a third-party turnstile. The DS-K5671-ZH has a 7 inch touch screen, holds up to 50,000 faces and recognises a face in under 0.2 seconds at 0.3 m to 3 m. The DS-K5671-ZV adds an IP65 rating.
