About this product

The CDVI I500SR is a 500kg maglock for external doors in harsh environments, running on 12/24Vdc. It is fail safe, so a magnetic lock like this releases when power is removed. It is monitored, built from high grade stainless steel, and rated IP68 and IK10.

Key features

  • Strong hold on the door – 500kg holding force
  • Reports back to your system – monitored, with 1 relay and NO/NC contacts
  • Made for outdoors – IP68 (dust tight and protected against water immersion), for external use and harsh environments
  • Resists rough treatment – IK10 (impact rating), high grade stainless steel
  • Works in extreme weather – -40°C to 60°C
  • Protects your electronics – built-in varistor

For installers

  • Power: 12/24Vdc, consumption 480mA @ 12Vdc or 240mA @ 24Vdc. Fail safe.
  • Mounting: surface, face or cross mounting holes. Maglock 230 x 61 x 40mm, armature plate 185 x 60 x 12mm, weight 3.32kg.
  • Cabling: female M20 cable gland outlet. Monitoring through 1 relay with NO/NC contacts.
  • Compatibility: if a bracket is needed, CDVI recommends the ESL-500 and ESZ.

Frequently asked questions

What is a maglock?

A maglock holds a door shut with an electromagnet and an armature plate. This one has a holding force of 500kg.

Does it stay locked in a power cut?

Only while its own power supply stays on, because it is fail safe. It stays held through a mains cut only if a battery-backed supply is powering it, and on an escape route it must still release, usually through a fire alarm link and a release device. Check this with whoever holds the building's fire strategy.

Can it be used outside?

Yes. It is an external maglock rated IP68 and IK10, and works from -40°C to 60°C.

How much current does it draw?

480mA @ 12Vdc or 240mA @ 24Vdc.

Is a bracket needed?

Only if the door frame needs one. CDVI recommends the ESL-500 and ESZ brackets for this lock.

What this magnetic lock is for

Outside doors need a lock that survives rain, frost and rough handling. This CDVI external maglock is built for that job, with no moving latch to wear or jam.

It suits access control installers securing exposed entrances. It also suits sites that want a lock status signal at the controller.

How does a maglock work?

A coil in the lock body becomes an electromagnet when powered. The armature plate fixed to the door is pulled firmly against it, which holds the door closed until the power is switched off.

  • Fail safe: a magnet only holds while it has power. The door is therefore free once the lock loses power, and that is why fail secure is not an option on a lock of this type.
  • Monitored: the lock has 1 relay with NO (normally open) and NC (normally closed) contacts, for wiring to a controller input.
  • Varistor: a coil gives off a voltage spike as it switches off. The built-in varistor absorbs that spike, which helps protect your controller.

Where to use it

Typical positions are exposed outer doors, away from any cover. It is rated from -40°C to 60°C, well beyond normal UK winters.

On an escape route, settle how a fail safe magnetic lock will release before fitting, because it can change the wiring and the parts you need.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 500kg holding force: this is the straight pull the magnet resists when the armature sits flat against it. Poor alignment reduces it, so fit the plate carefully.
  • 100kg side load: this is how much sideways force it resists, which matters on a door that can be shaken or levered.
  • 480mA @ 12Vdc or 240mA @ 24Vdc: a maglock draws this current constantly while it is locked. Running at 24Vdc halves the current, which makes long cable runs easier.
  • 3.32kg: this is a heavy lock, so fix it to a frame that can carry the load.

Installing it

  • Mounting holes: the lock has surface, face and cross mounting holes, so mark out against your frame before drilling.
  • Brackets by code: the ESL-500 is the L-bracket and the ESZ the Z-bracket. Choose by the layout of your door and frame.
  • Cable entry: the female M20 cable gland outlet takes a standard gland. Use one with a suitable seal, so the outside rating is not let down at the cable.
  • Wiring a maglock: as a rule, take the power pair from your controller or a separate supply through the release device, then take the relay pair back to a monitoring input.

Planning your system

A complete door needs a controller or release, a request-to-exit device, and a 12/24Vdc supply sized for the lock's constant draw. Size any battery back-up with the escape-route release in mind.

The armature plate fixes to the door, so check the door's construction can take the fixings.

Ratings explained

  • IP68: the 6 means no dust gets in, and the 8 covers continuous immersion under conditions set by the maker.
  • IK10: the highest common impact rating, meaning the housing withstands a 20 joule blow.
