What this fob is for

A proximity fob does the job of a door key on a controlled door. Each person has one, and the system decides who gets in. A lost fob can be taken off the system without changing a lock, which is why fobs are common in offices, shared buildings and blocks of flats.

This one is for access control systems, and it is a Mifare fob in a grey-blue finish.

How a contactless fob works

A contactless fob usually has no battery. The reader powers its chip by radio when the fob comes close, and then reads its identity.

In most systems, the controller then checks that identity against its list of allowed users and releases the door if it matches. The fob itself does not open anything.

Planning your system

• Match the reader: as a rule, the fob and the reader have to use the same technology. Check your proximity card reader lists Mifare before ordering in quantity.
• Colour coding: a colour helps staff sort fobs by site or group, but it gives no extra security. The system's own user records decide who is allowed through.
• Records: as a rule, note who holds which fob, and remove leavers promptly. The access control guide explains why every credential needs a process behind it.
