Frequently asked questions

How many doors and readers does it handle?

One door, with up to two access control devices. That can be one reader, a reader and exit push button, or two readers for read-in and read-out.

Does it keep working if the network goes down?

Yes. It supports ongoing access control and lift control functions if communication to the management platform is lost.

Can it run a fail safe lock?

Yes. It controls the door lock via Fail Safe and Fail Secure modes. A fail safe lock releases when power stops, and a fail secure lock stays locked.

Which cards and tokens does it support?

PAC, KeyPAC, PAC OPS™ Lite and PAC OPS™ as Cards and Tokens, and any card format supported by Wiegand.

Does it need software?

Yes. Configuration is via PC with PAC Access Central or Easinet Residential software, and many additional features rely on management software.

How far can readers be from the controller?

Up to 70m when the reader is powered from the controller, or 500m when it is locally powered.

Comelit PAC 511 DCi Access Controller, One-Door, Boxed with PSU 909030511

Overview

An access controller is the decision-maker behind a door. It holds the list of who may go where and when, takes the identity from a reader, and releases the lock when access is allowed.

This one is dedicated to a single door, and it can run singularly or as part of a larger PAC networked system. It sits with other access controllers and panels, as the central part of an access control system.

How it works

  • Local decisions: in-built databases and processing ability let it execute local access control, while management software adds many further features.
  • Read in and read out: two readers let the system record people entering and leaving, using PAC or Wiegand readers. Wiegand is a common wiring format for door readers.
  • Anti-passback: this stops one credential being used twice in the same direction, which helps keep the record of who is inside accurate.
  • Test mode: the One-Touch™ test mode gives a quick way to check the door during commissioning.

Where to use it

It suits a single door or lift control point. The operating range is -10°C to +55°C and 10% to 85% Relative Humidity, so keep the unit in a dry location away from condensation.

A fail safe lock releases when power stops, and on a mains cut it stays held only if battery back-up keeps it powered. A fail secure lock stays locked when power stops. On an escape route, fail safe is usually the choice, and the door still needs a release route, so take advice from whoever holds the fire strategy.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 20,000 keyholder records: on a site with fewer users than this, the door hardware is not the limit. Check the management software's own limits as well.
  • 70m and 500m: the shorter limit applies when the controller powers the reader. A locally powered reader extends the run to 500m.
  • 5Amp relay: the ancillary relay supports programmable outputs, while the lock relays have 3 Amp thermal fuse protection. Check the lock's draw against that 3 Amp figure.

Installing it

Allow for the 335 (w) × 335 (h) × 90 (d) mm cabinet and 4.4kg weight when choosing a fixing point. The tamper switch reports if the cabinet is opened, and the PSU is already wired to the controller.

Use Cat 5 UTP or higher for RS-485, and 24AWG / 0.22mm2 security cable or higher for readers. The TCP/IP connection is RJ-45.

Planning your system

A complete door also needs a reader, a lock and credentials, and the pre-wired PSU's loading should be checked against the reader and lock. See access control smart readers for reader types.

Where a door is on an escape route, the release arrangement matters as much as the controller. The access control guide explains how those parts fit together.
