What this emergency light does

An emergency downlight is a small fitting with its own battery, which provides light for people to find their way out when the mains supply fails. This one is an Escape Square, a surface-mounted body that needs no ceiling recess.

It is one part of a wider emergency lighting system. Other positions may suit a different fitting, such as a sign or a bulkhead.

How it works

  • Choice of lens: one lens spreads light widely for open spaces, and the other gives a narrower beam for corridors. Only one is used at a time.
  • Battery: CQR uses Lithium Ion LiFeP04 battery technology in all of its products. The cell can be replaced when it reaches the end of its life.
  • Test and charge: the fitting has TEST and CHARGE markings on the front. Use the fitting's instructions for what they show.

Where to use it

CQR points to restaurants and large open areas. IP65 also makes it a candidate where dust or splashing water would rule out a lower-rated fitting.

Escape routes, stairs and exit doors have their own requirements, so follow the emergency lighting regulations and your fire risk assessment.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Lumens: a measure of light output. The figure changes with the lens, so check the spacing for the lens you actually fit.
  • Beam angle: the 150° lens lights a broad circle, while the 80° x 30° lens throws light along a narrow strip.
  • L80 50,000hrs: a rated life figure for the light output, not a promise about the battery.
  • 6500K: a cool white colour of light.

Installing it

Check the spacing for your lens and mounting height before fixing positions.

Isolate before working, and keep the IP rating by sealing any conduit entry you use and blanking any you do not.
