What this shutter contact is for

Shutter doors are hard to protect with a normal door contact. They rattle, they sit loosely in their guides, and the gap at the bottom varies. This CQR contact is made for that job, with a far bigger gap than a typical door switch.

It suits shutters on units, garages and loading bays that form part of an intruder alarm.

How it works

• Two parts: the contact housing holds the reed switch, and the separate magnet housing moves with the door. The cable leaves from the contact housing.
• Reed switch: a reed is a small switch that a magnet holds closed. Pull the magnet away and it opens.
• Normally closed: N/C means the circuit is made while the door is shut. Opening the door, or cutting the wire, breaks the circuit, so the panel sees a change either way.

Where to use it

The range is suitable for internal and external roller door shutters. It is a Grade 2 contact, so it fits Grade 2 and lower systems.

If your insurer or specification asks for Grade 3, this code will not meet it, so check before you order.

What the figures mean in practice

• About 50mm pull-in gap: this is roughly how close the magnet has to be for the switch to close. A shutter that lifts or moves by more than that when locked will cause false alarms.
• 12Vdc 500mA: the most the switch should carry. An alarm zone normally carries far less, but do not use it to switch a load directly.
• Metal mounting: steel shutters and frames can reduce the working gap of any magnetic contact, so test it in position before you fix it permanently.

Installing it

• Line it up first: fix the magnet to the shutter and the contact to the floor or frame so the two parts close together squarely. Keep the contact clear of the door's path.
• Junction box: use the JB757/WH to terminate the wires, as the pre-wired cable will not usually reach the panel wiring by itself.
• Test: with the system in test, open and close the shutter several times. A loose magnet or a widening gap is a common cause of nuisance activations.

Planning your system

As well as the contact, the job needs a junction box, zone cable back to the panel and any resistors your panel expects. There are also pre-resistored and 1 metre versions, so check you have the right one before fitting.

A double-leaf or very wide shutter may need a contact on each moving section, depending on how it is built.

Standards and ratings explained

• Grade 2: EN 50131 sorts alarm equipment into four grades by risk. Grade 2 is the usual level for homes and many small businesses.
• Environmental Class III: under EN 50131, this class is for outdoor equipment in a sheltered position.
• IP rating 32: the 3 means protection against solid objects over 2.5mm, and the 2 means protection from dripping water at a slight angle. That is not a rating for direct rain.
