About this product

The CQR AEM20010 is a Deedlock standard magnetic lock for a single door in medium to high traffic areas. It suits entry and exit door installs where a status signal is not needed. It runs on 12/24V DC and holds 1200 lbf (545kgf). As a magnetic lock it works fail safe, releasing when power stops.

Key features

  • Very strong hold – nominal holding force of 1200 lbf (5337N) (545kgf) per single door
  • Made for busier doors – designed for medium to high traffic areas
  • Runs on either common voltage – 12/24V DC self-regulating
  • Easy to read the door state – an L shape indicator gives 180° visual indication
  • Tested for real installs – TS010 Grade 3 under the Doors and Hardware Federations technical standard
  • Tidy finish – satin anodised aluminium housing

For installers

  • Power: 12/24V DC self-regulating. Current 12v = 500mA (+/-10%), 24v = 250mA (+/-10%).
  • Mounting: magnet L265 X H72.7 X D40.7mm, weight 4.4KG (Single).
  • Compatibility: brackets for the standard range are STD/L, STD/ZL and STD/AH, plus architectural versions STD/L/ARC and STD/ZL/ARC.
  • Standards: TS010 Grade 3. Check the approvals you need against the unit's documentation before specifying it for a fire door or escape route.

Frequently asked questions

What does unmonitored mean?

It has no status output for a controller to read. CQR sells a monitored version of the standard lock if the system needs one.

Does it stay locked in a power cut?

Only while its own power supply stays on, because a magnetic lock holds only while powered. It stays held through a mains cut only if a battery-backed supply is powering it, and on an escape route it must still release, usually through a fire alarm link and a release device. Check this with whoever holds the building's fire strategy.

How much current does it draw?

At 12v it draws 500mA (+/-10%). At 24v it draws 250mA (+/-10%).

Is a bracket needed?

Only if the door or frame cannot take the magnet and armature directly. CQR offers L, Z&L and armature housing options for the standard range, and a bracket will typically reduce the holding force by up to 70%.

Does it suit a pair of doors?

No, this is the single version. CQR offers a separate double in the same standard range.

What this lock is for

Entrance doors take more use and more force than most internal doors. A full size lock like this gives a much higher holding force than a slim one, with a bigger body on the frame.

This CQR magnetic lock is the unmonitored single in the Deedlock standard range. It suits an access control system or door entry job where the lock simply holds and releases.

How it works

  • Magnet and armature: a coil in the body becomes an electromagnet when powered and pulls a steel armature plate fixed to the door. Switch the power off and the door is free.
  • Self-regulating voltage: the lock accepts 12V or 24V DC without you setting it, drawing less current at the higher voltage.
  • No status output: an unmonitored lock cannot tell a controller whether the door is held, so use a separate door contact if the system needs that signal.

Where to use it

The range is made for entry and exit doors in medium to high traffic areas. Typical places are main entrances, communal doors and busy corridors.

Any door people use to leave a building needs extra thought. A magnetic lock on an escape route usually needs a fire alarm link and a release device, and that decision sits with whoever holds the fire strategy.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 545kgf: this is a nominal holding force with the armature flat against the magnet. The frame and fixings need to be strong enough to take it.
  • Up to 70% on brackets: a bracket will typically reduce the holding force by up to this much, because a bracket flexes. Fit directly to the door where you can.
  • 500mA at 12v: size the supply for the whole door, including the controller and any release devices, then add a margin.

Installing it

  • Check the opening: outward-opening doors usually take the lock and armature directly, while inward-opening doors usually need brackets.
  • Choosing a bracket: CQR offers the STD/ZL and STD/L brackets and the STD/AH armature housing for this range, so match the bracket to the door before you drill.
  • Safety straps: CQR also offers AEM/STRAPS, which stop the magnet falling from the door frame if it comes away from the mounting.

Planning your system

The lock is one part of the door. The job also needs a controller or door entry system, a DC power supply and a way to release the door from inside.

Decide early whether the lock must hold during a mains cut. If it must, the supply needs battery back-up, and the release arrangements on escape routes still have to work.

Standards and ratings explained

TS010 is the Doors and Hardware Federations technical standard for electro-magnets, in the 2019 version CQR tested against. This lock is rated TS010 Grade 3.
