Overview

A request to exit button is the switch someone presses on the inside of a controlled door to leave. Many are made to sit in the wall, which is not always possible. This aluminium housing gives the buttons it suits a body to sit in on the wall surface.

Where to use it

As a rule, a surface box suits a solid or tiled wall, or anywhere a flush box would mean cutting into a finished surface. It also makes a later change simpler, as the wall stays uncut.

For a wet or exposed position, look for an outdoor-rated part among the wider exit buttons instead.

Installing it

• Check the fit first: hold the button against the box before drilling the wall.
• Cable route: plan how the cable reaches the button, because a surface box often means surface trunking or a hole through the wall behind it.
• Height and position: fit the button where people expect it, close to the door and clear of the swing.

Planning your system

This box is only one part of a controlled door. As a rule, the job also needs a lock, a power supply and a reader or keypad as part of the wider access control system.

An exit button alone is usually not enough on an escape route, as a door there also needs a release that works if the system fails. Check with whoever holds the fire strategy.
