About this product

The Eaton CASBB394 is an addressable sounder base with an open class visual alarm device (VAD), a flashing light for alerting people who may not hear an alarm. It suits Eaton addressable fire systems. Fit a sensor on top, or use it alone as a sounder beacon. It flashes white and has an integral short circuit isolator.

Key features

  • Sound, light and detection at one point – single point connection for sensor, sounder and VAD
  • Flexible use – with a sensor as a sounder beacon base, or stand alone as a sounder beacon
  • Set from the panel – selectable tones and adjustable volume via Fire alarm control panel
  • Limits the effect of a cable fault – integral short circuit isolator
  • Certified visual alarm – certified as an Open Class Visual Alarm Device, white flash
  • Second fix made simpler – first fix base

Frequently asked questions

Does the base need a detector fitted?

No. It can be used with a sensor as a sounder beacon base, or stand alone as a sounder beacon. For the stand alone option, Eaton offers an optional cover plate (CASC).

Which sensors does it take?

It takes the CAP320 optical smoke sensor, CAPT340 photo/thermal sensor or CAH330 multi-mode heat sensor.

How loud is it?

Up to 93dB at high volume, within +/-3dB. Low volume is 83dB and medium volume is 90dB.

How are tone and volume changed?

From the control panel. There is no need to access the sounder to alter the setting.

Will it work on any addressable panel?

No. It is compatible with Eaton's own range of intelligent addressable sensors and fire systems. Check your panel model with Eaton.

Is it suitable for outdoor use?

Plan on indoor use. Its environment category is Type A / IP21C, and it works at -10 to +55oC (95%RH).

Eaton CASBB394 addressable sounder VAD base, angled view

Eaton Addressable Sounder Base with Open Class VAD, White Flash, 93dB CASBB394

What this sounder base does

A detector needs a base to sit on, and a sounder base adds an alarm in the same spot. This one goes a step further with a white flashing light, so one ceiling position can detect, sound and flash.

Check Eaton's current documents if you are matching a current panel.

How it works

  • Addressable: the device has its own identity on the loop, and it is soft addressed, meaning the address is not set by hand with switches.
  • Short circuit isolator: a built-in switch that opens when it sees a short circuit, so a cable fault affects less of the loop.
  • Panel control: tone and volume come from the panel, which saves getting up a ladder to change them.
  • VAD: a visual alarm device is a certified flashing warning, as distinct from a simple beacon. Open class is its category of coverage.

Where to use it

It suits indoor positions, given its Type A / IP21C environment category. VADs are often added where occupants may not hear an alarm, or where noise levels are high.

Get the coverage area for the visual alarm from Eaton before setting out positions, as coverage decides how many you need.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 83dB to 93dB: the three volume settings, with more current drawn at each step. Use the higher current when adding up the loop.
  • EN54-23:2010: the standard for visual alarm devices, sitting alongside EN54-3 for sounders and EN54-17:2005 for short circuit isolators.

Installing it

  • First fix: the base goes up first, and the main body then clips on and locks in place when pressed into position.
  • Terminals: wires terminate at the front of the body. The base's own terminals are not used, so do not land cables there.
  • Testing: Eaton warns: do NOT use high voltage testers if ANY equipment is connected to the system.
  • Screen: the earth screen must be continuous along the entire length of the loop.

Planning your system

The sensors and cover plates have their own catalogue numbers, so check what is supplied before ordering. Decide at the design stage which positions take a sensor and which take a cover plate.

As a rule, protocols do not mix between makes, so check your panel first. The fire alarm system guide explains why, and fire detector bases covers other base types.
