What an extension speaker is for

An alarm panel or keypad makes its entry and exit tones in one place. On a larger property those tones can be hard to hear from the far end of the building, or from an upstairs room.

An extension speaker repeats them where they are needed. That helps the people using the system every day, and it gives the installer an easy way to fix a complaint that the tones cannot be heard.

How it works

• Speaker, not a siren: this is an internal sounder driven by the system, not an external bell box. It sits inside and repeats what the system is saying.
• Ohms: this measures how much a speaker resists the signal from the panel. A panel output is designed for a certain value, so a mismatch can leave the speaker too quiet or strain the output.
• Tamper housing: check how the tamper connects to your panel's tamper circuit when wiring it.

Where to use it

Put it where people need to hear the tones, such as a back room, a landing or a workshop. It is an internal sounder, so keep it indoors and out of damp spaces.

As a rule, avoid a position right beside a bedroom door unless night tones are wanted there.

Planning your system

• Panel: you need an alarm panel with a speaker output that suits 16 ohm. Check the panel's documentation.
• Cable: plan alarm cable with cores for the speaker pair and the tamper, and keep long runs in mind because sound level can drop with distance.
• Other sounders: this speaker does not replace an external sounder. A system that needs one will still need its own bell box.
