What this sounder does

A sounder is the part of a fire alarm that tells people to leave. When the control panel goes into alarm, it powers its sounder circuit and every sounder on that circuit starts.

This one is from the Fulleon ROLP range and sits on a deep white base. It is made for a conventional system, where devices are wired in zones and are not given individual addresses.

Where to use it

It suits corridors, plant rooms and other areas of a building where a wired commercial fire alarm system already runs, provided the design calls for a sounder at that point.

IP65 points to good protection from dust and water, but check the full installation instructions before fitting one outside.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Output in decibels: sound drops as distance grows, and doors and walls reduce it further. Check the level reached in each room, not just the headline figure.
  • Not every tone is certified: of the 32 tones, 6 are EN certified. Choose one of those where the system has to meet the standard, and check the maker's instructions for which they are.
  • Alarm current: take the current for each sounder from the maker's instructions, then compare the total on a circuit with what that panel output can supply.

Installing it

  • Cable entry: the M20 hole takes a gland or conduit fitting of that size. Keep the entry sealed so the protection rating is not let down at the cable.
  • Tone choice: as a rule, use the same tone across a building, so that one sound always means the same thing to the people inside.
  • Testing: sound the circuit after fitting and confirm the output in each area before handing over.

Planning your system

You will also need a conventional control panel with a spare sounder circuit, and fire rated cable to suit your design. Check that the output is a nominal 24 V DC circuit.
