About this product

Please note: this is a non-returnable item (excluding faulty goods)

The Eaton 5SC1500i is a 1500 VA / 1050 W line interactive UPS in a tower case, with an LCD display, eight C13 outlets, USB and serial.

It keeps servers and network equipment running when the mains drops out. On battery it gives a pure sine wave output, which suits sensitive loads such as active PFC (power factor corrected) servers. Buck and boost regulation corrects a wide input range — 184 to 276 V — continuously, without using the battery.

Key points

  • 1500 VA / 1050 W: single-phase output at 230 V. Eaton states the output frequency as 50/60 Hz, autosensing. The output voltage is adjustable to 220, 230 or 240 V.
  • Line interactive design: buck and boost regulation holds the output steady through mains sags and surges, so the battery is not called on for every small dip.
  • Pure sine wave on battery: a clean output signal for equipment that will not tolerate a stepped or approximated waveform.
  • Eight outlets: 8 x IEC 60320 C13. The input is a single IEC 60320 C14 inlet.
  • LCD interface: shows input and output voltage, load, battery level and estimated runtime. It also sets output voltage, the audible alarm and sensitivity.
  • USB and RS-232: one USB port and one serial port. The USB port is HID compliant, so it integrates automatically with Windows, macOS and Linux. The two ports cannot be used at the same time.
  • Battery: three maintenance-free 9.0 Ah lead-acid batteries, replaceable from the front panel. Eaton ABM three-stage charging, automatic battery test and deep-discharge protection.
  • Runtime: Eaton quotes about 13 minutes at 50% load and about 8 minutes at 70% load, at 0.7 power factor. Backup times are approximate and vary with the equipment, the battery's age and temperature.
  • Tower case: 210 mm high, 150 mm wide, 410 mm deep. 15.2 kg. Sound emission below 40 dB. Maximum operating temperature 35°C.
  • Standards: Eaton's EU Declaration of Conformity for the 5SC range cites EN IEC 62040-1 and EN 62040-2, under the Low Voltage, EMC and RoHS Directives. Separately, Eaton marks this unit with the WEEE symbol and gives disposal instructions: waste electrical and electronic equipment should not go in the general waste, so use a local recycling, reuse or hazardous waste centre.
  • In the box: two IEC-to-IEC cables, a serial cable, a USB cable, a quickstart guide and safety instructions.

Use cases

Eaton positions the 5SC range as protection for rack or tower servers, NAS and network equipment, and for ATMs, ticket machines and kiosks. The short tower case is intended for small cabinets and for sites where depth is the constraint. Everything it protects plugs into its eight C13 outlets, so the practical limit is one small group of equipment: a server and its switch, a NAS, or a single kiosk or ticket machine.

Eaton 5SC1500i line interactive UPS, tower case with LCD display

Eaton 5SC1500i Line Interactive UPS, 1500VA / 1050W, Tower, LCD, 8× IEC C13

Who this is for

For the installer or IT specifier: size the load first. 1050 W is the real ceiling, not the 1500 VA figure.

The input is an IEC 60320 C14 inlet and every outlet is a C13, so this expects cold-appliance leads throughout, not 13 A sockets. Eaton fits the communication card slot and the ROO/RPO terminal to the rack and R/T versions only, so this tower model has neither. Monitoring is over USB or RS-232, one at a time.

Eaton rates the input at single phase 220 to 240 V, and gives the input frequency range as 45 to 55 Hz on a 50 Hz system. The output can be set to 220, 230 or 240 V.

In plain English: this is a battery in a box that sits between the wall and your equipment. When the power goes off, the equipment carries on for a few minutes — long enough to shut down properly rather than be cut off mid-write. It is not a generator and it is not meant to keep you working through a long outage.

Buying this in the UK

  • This is a non-returnable item (excluding faulty goods), so confirm the load and the outlet count before you order rather than after.
  • The listed pack contents are two IEC-to-IEC cables, a serial cable, a USB cable, a quickstart guide and safety instructions. No UK 13 A mains lead is listed, so check what you have on site before installation day.
  • It takes a 220 to 240 V supply, and the output can be set to 240 V if that is what your equipment expects.
  • Eaton marks this unit with the WEEE symbol and says to use a local recycling, reuse or hazardous waste centre rather than the general waste. It also contains sealed lead-acid batteries, so both the unit and its replacement batteries need disposing of properly at end of life.
  • At 15.2 kg it is a two-hand lift, and it needs 410 mm of depth.

Questions we get asked

  • How much can I run from it? Add up the wattage on the labels of everything you want protected and keep the total under 1050 W. The closer you run to that figure, the shorter the backup time.
  • How long will it hold everything up? Eaton quotes around 13 minutes at 50% load and around 8 minutes at 70% load, both at 0.7 power factor. Treat them as approximate — Eaton notes that backup times vary with the equipment, its configuration, battery age and temperature.
  • Can I fit a network management card? Not to this one. Eaton's datasheet puts the communication card slot on the rack and R/T models only. On this tower model you monitor over the USB or the RS-232 port.
  • Can the batteries be changed? Yes. There are three maintenance-free 9.0 Ah lead-acid batteries and Eaton designs them to be replaced from the front panel, so the unit does not have to come apart.
  • Will it upset a server with an active PFC power supply? That is exactly what the pure sine wave output is for. On battery the waveform stays clean rather than stepped.
  • Is it noisy? Sound emission is quoted as below 40 dB.
