Overview

A smoke detector reports to a fire alarm panel, and the panel raises the alarm. That makes it different from a domestic smoke alarm, which sounds on its own.

This Eaton head sits among the conventional fire detectors, and it is a white plastic optical detector for EN54 systems.

How it works

As a rule, an optical detector shines light inside a small chamber. Smoke entering the chamber scatters that light on to a sensor, and the detector then signals the panel.

On a conventional fire alarm system the panel shows the zone in alarm, not the individual device. Finding the head that operated is then a walk round that zone.

Where to use it

It is for ceilings in open areas, and IP40 means it has no rated protection against water, so plan on dry indoor positions.

Optical detectors are often less suited to places with steam, dust or cooking fumes. A heat detector is the usual alternative there, but the system design decides.

Installing it

Check the base it needs with Eaton before ordering.

Conventional detector heads usually fit into a separate base, so confirm what the head needs for the job. Fire alarm wiring and commissioning belong with a competent installer.

The job also needs a conventional control panel, and the head and panel should be checked for compatibility before ordering. Spacing and positions come from the system design.
