Frequently asked questions

How is the HUD-2R-RMT worn?

On a belt or as a pendant. It is worn by the user rather than fixed to a wall.

How many channels does it have?

One. It is a single channel transmitter; the HUD-2R-RMT-LR is the extended range, belt-worn version.

What battery does it use?

A replaceable 3v CR1/3N lithium battery, and it sends a signal when less than one month's operation remains.

What is its range?

Over 1000 m in free space. Buildings shorten that, so test from the places the wearer will be.

Can it raise a confirmed alarm?

It is BS8243 compliant for both confirmed and unconfirmed alarms; how the alarm is treated depends on how the panel is set up.

Eaton Scantronic HUD-2R-RMT Personal Attack Transmitter, Wireless Panic Alarm, Belt or Pendant, Single Channel

Overview

A personal attack transmitter is a panic button the user carries, so help can be called from anywhere within radio range rather than only at a fixed point. In alarm terms this is a hold-up alarm, or HUA.

This one is the standard range, single channel model, worn on a belt or as a pendant and sending its signal by Scantronic radio.

How it works

  • Double push: the range uses a double push radio channel for HUA, and dual button operation makes an accidental alarm much less likely.
  • Radio: it works on Scantronic Secure Radio, with two-way communication and signal encryption, or in backwards compatible narrow-band operation for older receivers.
  • Battery warning: the lithium battery sends a signal when less than one month's operation remains, so it can be changed before it fails.

Where to use it

Wearable panic alarms suit staff who move around a building, such as receptionists, retail staff and care staff.

Where a fixed point is better, such as under a counter, a fixed hold-up button may suit instead.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Over 1000 m in free space: free space means open air with nothing in the way. Walls, floors and metal shorten the usable range, so walk-test from the far corners of the site.
  • 10 mW: this is the transmitter's radio output power, the same figure across the range.

Installing it

  • Enrol it: as a rule, learn the transmitter on to the panel or receiver, then test it from every area the wearer will cover.
  • Agree the response: decide with the customer and any alarm receiving centre how its alarms will be treated before handover.
  • Battery: the CR1/3N lithium cell is replaceable, so keep a spare on site.

Planning your system

The transmitter needs a Scantronic alarm panel or receiver that supports its radio mode; the wireless alarm systems range shows other radio kit. For more distance, the extended range HUD-2R-RMT-LR is belt-worn.

Hold-up alarms matter most when the system is monitored, and the guide to monitored alarm systems explains how alarm receiving centres handle them. The full range of panic and personal alarms covers fixed and other wearable buttons.

Standards and ratings explained

  • BS8243: the UK code for setting up alarm systems that produce confirmed alarms, including hold-up alarms.
  • RED: the Radio Equipment Directive sets the rules for radio products on the EU market, and this transmitter is compliant.
