Overview

A manual call point lets a person raise the fire alarm by hand, without waiting for a detector to respond. This Eaton unit belongs to the CXM range and is built for locations where a standard indoor unit would be exposed.

Call points are usually placed on escape routes and at exits, as part of a system designed for the building.

How it works

Pressing the plastic element operates a single pole changeover contact. Changeover means the switch has a common terminal that moves between two others, so it can open one circuit and close another.

On a conventional fire alarm system the panel reports which zone is in alarm, not which device. Finding the operated call point is then a walk round that zone.

Where to use it

• Inside: wall surface mounting suits internal positions.
• Exposed walls: wall mounting is the weatherproof position.
• Check first: check the unit's documentation before using it in a hazardous area or at temperature extremes.

Installing it

The cable enters through an M20 hole. As a rule, use a gland or fitting that keeps the IP rating, because an open or poorly sealed entry defeats it.

As a rule, wiring and commissioning belong with a competent fire alarm installer, working to the system design and BS 5839-1.

Planning your system

As a rule, the job also needs a conventional control panel, the zone wiring and the sounders that go with it.

Take any end of line or panel resistor values from the panel's own documents.

Standards and ratings explained

IP66 means dust tight and protected against powerful water jets. It has no bearing on fire approval.

It carries CE. If your specification requires a named approval, check it against the unit's documentation before the unit is fitted.
