Frequently asked questions

How is an alarm raised on the HUD-2R-FXD?

By pressing the buttons. Dual button activation raises a confirmed or unconfirmed hold-up alarm, and the device can be set for 2 or 1 button activation.

How is it reset after an alarm?

Electronically, without a key. Keyless resetting means there is no bespoke key to find.

Which panels does it work with?

Current Scantronic i-on panels and standalone receivers. SSR 2-way mode needs control unit firmware v8 or higher; legacy modes need v7.03 or higher, or a panel that takes the 700 series radio devices.

What batteries does it take?

2 x 1.5V AA alkaline batteries with a minimum capacity of 2700mAh. Typical battery life is 5 years.

How far can it be from the panel?

Up to 700 m in free space. Walls and metalwork shorten that, so test the signal at the chosen position.

Eaton HUD-2R-FXD wireless hold-up device, front view

Eaton Scantronic HUD-2R-FXD Fixed Wireless Panic Button, Two-Way Radio Hold-Up Device, Dual Button, White

Overview

A hold-up device lets someone raise an alarm during a robbery or threat without reaching the keypad. HUA stands for hold-up alarm, and a confirmed HUA is one the system treats as verified rather than a single trigger.

This one is wall mounted and talks to the panel by two-way radio, so no cable has to be run to it.

How it works

  • Two buttons: the dual button design makes an accidental press much less likely, and it can be set for 2 or 1 button activation.
  • Confirmation: the device can raise an unconfirmed or a confirmed HUA, so a confirmed alarm can come from a single device.
  • Feedback and reset: a visual indication tells the user the alarm has been actioned, and the unit resets electronically without a key.

Where to use it

Choose a wall position close to where staff work, such as beside a reception desk or near an entrance, where it can be reached quickly and discreetly. At home, a bedroom or hallway wall is common.

It is environmental Class II and works from -10°C to +55°C at up to 95% humidity, non-condensing, which suits indoor positions.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 700 m in free space: free space means open air with nothing in the way. Indoors, walls, floors and metalwork shorten the usable range, so test at the chosen spot.
  • 5 years typical battery life: the low standby current of 12 µA is what lets 2 AA cells last that long. Frequent tests and alarms use more.

Installing it

  • Learn it in first: as a rule, enrol the device on the panel before fixing it, then walk-test from the final position.
  • Check firmware: SSR 2-way mode needs control unit firmware v8 or higher, so update older panels or use a legacy mode where the panel allows.
  • Agree the response: decide with the customer and any alarm receiving centre whether the device signals a confirmed or unconfirmed alarm before handover.

Planning your system

The device needs a compatible Scantronic alarm panel or receiver; the wireless alarm systems range shows other radio kit. Where staff move around, a wearable button often suits better than a fixed one.

Confirmed alarms matter most when the system is monitored, and the guide to monitored alarm systems explains how alarm receiving centres handle them. The full range of panic and personal alarms covers other fixed and wearable buttons.

Standards and ratings explained

  • BS 8243: the UK code for setting up alarm systems that produce confirmed alarms, including hold-up alarms.
  • EN 50131-5-3 and PD6662: EN 50131-5-3 covers radio equipment in intruder and hold-up alarms, and PD6662 is the UK scheme for applying the EN 50131 series.
