What this recorder is for

An NVR (network video recorder) stores and plays back video from IP cameras over a network, where a DVR records analogue cameras over coax. This Hikvision model is for bigger systems of up to 16 cameras.

It can suit a warehouse, school, farm or large home. The 1.5U case, about one and a half standard rack heights, leaves room for several drives.

How the recorder's technology works

• AcuSense: Hikvision's name for analysis that sorts movement into people and vehicles. Motion detection 2.0 runs on all channels, and perimeter protection on 2-ch at the recorder.
• AI by camera: where a camera does its own analysis, the recorder can use those events on all channels. ANPR, the reading of number plates, is one such function.
• Facial recognition: the recorder can hold up to 16 face picture libraries and search them. Check the data protection rules before you switch this on.
• Stream over TLS: encryption for video as it moves across the network, which makes it harder to intercept.

Where to use it

The -10 °C to 55 °C range suits a dry indoor space such as a comms room or cabinet. Keep it away from condensation, as working humidity is 10 to 90%.

As a rule, a locked room helps, because taking the recorder also takes the footage.

What the figures mean in practice

• 160 Mbps in: add up the bit rate set on every camera, and keep the total within this figure.
• 160 Mbps out: this is the limit for video sent onward to remote viewers or playback clients at one time.
• Decoding with AI on: this limits how much it can play back at once: 1-ch@12 MP, or 2-ch@8 MP, or 4-ch@4 MP, or 8-ch@1080p.
• Recording resolution: it accepts up to 12 MP, so a 4K (8 MP) camera is within its range.

Installing it

• Network: there are 2 RJ-45 interfaces, called LAN 1 and LAN 2, which gives you a second connection to plan around.
• Screen: HDMI and VGA are independent outputs, and only HDMI goes up to 4K (3840 × 2160)/30Hz.
• Two-way audio: this uses the audio input, through an RCA connection.
• Set-up: the web interface runs in Chrome V57, Firefox V52, Safari V12, Edge V89 or above.

Planning your system

As a rule, choose surveillance-rated drives, as a recorder writes around the clock. Work out how many days you need before picking a size.

Add IP cameras that suit the site. PoE cameras can take power over their network cables from a PoE switch. Hikvision also makes an alarm version of this recorder, the DS-7716NXI-K4(D)/Alarm16+9.
