Who this is for

For the installer. Two things decide this job before you quote it. First, the memory card is factory-fitted — Hikvision's own note says to order it with the camera, because it is installed during manufacturing. You cannot open a flameproof enclosure on site to add one later without destroying the certification that is the entire point of the product. Decide storage at order stage. Second, the cable is a 1.3 m integral tail, not a gland you terminate: the joint has to be made in a certified enclosure, which is what the optional DS-2XE2702/2703 junction boxes are for. Power is 24 VDC or plain 802.3af PoE at 7.5 W, so the supply side is undemanding — the certification and the termination are where the work is.

For the end user. This is a camera you buy because the law and your insurer require it, not because of its picture. In an area where flammable gas or combustible dust can be present, an ordinary camera is an ignition source: its electronics can spark. A flameproof camera contains any ignition inside its own housing so it cannot reach the atmosphere outside. That is what the `Ex db` marking means, and it is why this weighs 2 kg and costs what it does. Image-wise it is a straightforward 2 MP fixed camera with 30 m of infrared — deliberately simple, because complexity is a liability in a certified enclosure.

Buying this in the UK

Hazardous areas in Great Britain are governed by DSEAR — the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002. Under DSEAR the duty holder must classify the area into zones and select equipment appropriate to the zone in question. This camera is certified for Zone 1 and Zone 2 (gas) and Zone 21 and Zone 22 (dust), with a T6 temperature class and gas group IIC. Match those markings against your own zone classification and ignition temperature assessment before ordering: certification is specific, and a camera rated for one zone is not automatically acceptable in another. If you do not have a current zone classification, that is the first job, not the camera.

Common questions

What does ATEX certification actually mean? ATEX is the European certification scheme for equipment used where explosive atmospheres may occur. This camera carries both ATEX and IECEx approval, marked II 2 G D Ex db IIC T6 Gb / Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db, covering gas and dust.

Which zones is it approved for? Zone 1 and Zone 2 for explosive gas, Zone 21 and Zone 22 for combustible dust. It is not approved for Zone 0.

Is it intrinsically safe? No — and the distinction matters. This is a flameproof (`Ex db`) camera: it contains an ignition within its housing. Intrinsically safe equipment (`Ex i`) works differently, by limiting energy so ignition cannot occur at all. If your specification calls specifically for intrinsic safety, this is not the right product.

Can I add a memory card later? In practice no. Hikvision fits the card during manufacturing and recommends ordering it with the camera. Opening a flameproof enclosure on site compromises the certification. Order the storage you need up front, or record to an NVR.

Does it zoom? No. It has a fixed 4 mm lens giving an 87.6° horizontal field of view; a 6 mm version is available for a narrower, longer view. The pan and tilt figures in the specification are a manual bracket adjustment set at installation, not remote control.

How is it powered? 24 VDC or standard 802.3af PoE, maximum 7.5 W on either. It has a 1.3 m integral cable tail rather than a field-wireable gland.
