What this panoramic camera is for

Covering a wide space usually takes two cameras and two pictures to watch. This Hikvision camera puts two sensors in one body and presents all of it as a single image.

It can suit a car park, yard or building frontage, and an installer who wants one cable run where two would otherwise be needed. A bullet camera has a long body on a bracket, so it is plainly visible from a distance.

How the camera's technology works

• ColorVu: Hikvision's name for its colour-at-night technology. The F1.0 aperture collects more light, so the picture can stay in colour in dim scenes.
• White light: the camera's own lamps add light when the scene needs it. Smart supplement light is a feature, and the lamps can also flash as a warning.
• Deep learning: software trained on examples sorts movement into people and vehicles, so line crossing and intrusion alarms can ignore other movement.
• Deterrent: an alarm can set off the flashing light and the built-in speaker, which reaches 97 dB at 10 cm.

Where to use it

The IP67 rating and -30 °C to 60 °C working range cover open walls and poles in UK weather. Mount it on a long wall facing the space, as a 180° view takes in everything in front of it.

White light and an audio alarm are noticeable, so think about neighbours and set schedules to suit. It has no specific anti-corrosion protection, so avoid coastal and chemical sites.

What the figures mean in practice

• DORI distances: these stand for detect, observe, recognise and identify. To identify a stranger, plan on 4.5 m, and treat 45 m only as seeing that something moved.
• 3632 × 1632: the pixels are spread across the whole 180°, so this camera is for awareness of a wide area and not for detail at range.
• 20 fps: the main stream runs at this rate at full resolution, which is smooth enough for general monitoring.
• Close limit: focus holds from 2 m outwards, so do not expect sharp faces right under the camera.

Installing it

• Power budget: a PoE switch port must supply Class 3, one of the PoE power levels. Allow max. 12.5 W when adding up the load.
• Fixings by code: as well as the pole and corner mounts, the options include the DS-1275ZJ-S-SUS vertical pole mount and the DS-1260ZJ and DS-1280ZJ-S junction boxes. Check each one's finish on its own page.
• DC input: the Ø 5.5 mm coaxial power plug has reverse polarity protection, which guards the camera if the supply is wired the wrong way round.
• First set-up: use plug-in free live view in Chrome 57.0+, Firefox 52.0+ or Edge 89+, or the iVMS-4200 client.

Planning your system

Small jobs can save to a microSD card or a NAS (network attached storage) drive. For longer retention, add a network video recorder that shares one of the profiles below, plus hard drives sized for how many days you want to keep.

A panoramic picture is a wide shape, so check how the recorder and viewing screen show it before you choose this camera.

• IP67: dust tight, and protected against temporary immersion in water.
• Profiles S, G and T: parts of the Open Network Video Interface standard. Profile S covers streaming, G covers on-device recording and T covers advanced video such as H.265.
