What this kit is for

A video door entry system lets you see who is at the door, speak to them and release the lock from inside. This Hikvision bundle covers a single entrance with one call button.

It suits a house or similar property where a new cable run would be awkward, because only two wires link the outdoor and indoor units.

How it works

• A call: the caller presses the call button. The resident can then receive or decline the call and unlock the door.
• Two wires: both the door station's power and its signal reach it through the two-wire link. That is the main saving on the job.
• Low light: the supplement light comes on when the door station detects a dark picture. It is an infrared mode, so do not plan on colour after dark.
• WDR: this helps when a caller stands against a bright background, such as a sunny street behind a shaded porch.

Where to use it

The door station belongs at the entrance and is built for outdoor use, with a heater supported for cold spells. The indoor station is the opposite, with a much narrower working temperature, so it should stay in a heated room.

Plan on no card reader at the door station unless Hikvision confirms one. If you need one, plan a separate reader and controller.

What the figures mean in practice

• IP65: the 6 means dust tight. The 5 means protection against water jets, which covers normal rain on a wall.
• 2MP: the main stream is 1920 × 1080p. The wide field of view helps you see someone standing to one side of the door.
• Alarm inputs: the door station has 2 and the indoor station has 8. Check the configuration guide before relying on them.

Installing it

• Fix the door station: use a matched gang box for surface or flush mounting. For a flush fit, allow a hole of 103.5 mm × 162.5 mm × 40.5 mm.
• Connect before mounting: connect cables to the door station first, with all related equipment powered off.
• Set it up: the open duration and other parameters are set from the indoor station.
• Lock wiring: the door station offers NC, NO and COM terminals. A lock with a higher current draw than the 12 V/1 A output should have its own supply.

Planning your system

Allow for a 24 VDC supply for the indoor station, and check whether one comes in the box. You will also need the electric lock or strike you want to release, and 2-wire cable for the run.

For the mobile app, the indoor station needs Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n on a network with internet access. Check the signal where the screen will be mounted before fixing it.
