Hochiki FIRElink Aspirating Smoke Detector with Command Module FIRELINK-400CM

Overview

A point detector waits for smoke to reach it. An aspirating system instead pulls air back to the detector through a network of small holes in sampling pipes, so it can find very low levels of smoke early.

The FIRElink-400CM is Hochiki's FIRElink detector with an integrated Command Module. Besides its own detection, it gives one place to display, control and program a network of FIRElink units.

How it works

  • Sampling: a fan draws air along up to four pipes into the detection chamber.
  • Laser detection: a laser measures light scattered by particles in the air, with a measurement range of 0.0015% to 25% obs/m.
  • Dust discrimination: 3D3 Laser Dust Discrimination separates dust from smoke, which cuts false alarms in dusty spaces.
  • Four alarm levels: Aux, Pre-alarm, Fire 1 and Fire 2 let a site respond in stages, from investigation to full evacuation.

Where to use it

As a rule, aspirating detection is chosen where early warning matters or where point detectors are hard to reach: data and comms rooms, high-ceiling warehouses, atriums and heritage buildings. In most installations the pipework can run hidden in a ceiling void, with only small sampling points showing.

The unit itself is IP50 and rated -10 °C to + 60 °C (CEA4022), so fit it in an accessible, protected position.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 200 m @ 100 sampling holes: the total pipe the detector can manage, shared across its pipes. Longer runs and more holes slow the transport time, so pipe design software usually sets the real layout.
  • 127 detectors: the size of FIRElink network the Command Module can display and control.
  • 920 mA @ 24 V dc at fan speed 8: a heavy load beside a point detector. Size the power supply and standby batteries with it in mind.

Installing it

  • Pipework: use the FIRElink red ABS pipe and fittings, ¾” nominal bore, such as the FL-90BR 90 degree bend.
  • Exhaust: outlets on top and at the rear give a choice of where the sampled air leaves the unit.
  • Connections: relay contacts are rated 500 mA @ 30 V, and RS485 links other FIRElink units.
  • Commissioning: as a rule, test transport time from the furthest hole and record the results.

Planning your system

A FIRElink system also needs a fire alarm power supply with batteries and the pipe network. Where one detector is enough and no Command Module is needed, the standard FIRElink-400 suits, and other aspirating smoke detectors are worth comparing.
