About this product

The Hochiki DCD-AE3(WHT) is a conventional heat detector for rooms with medium ambient temperatures, such as drying rooms. It combines a rate of rise response with a 60 °C fixed temperature element, in a white case. It runs on 9.5 – 30 V dc and has a remote indicator output.

Key features

  • Responds to a fast rise or a set limit – rate of rise detection with a 60 °C fixed temperature element
  • Steady, accurate response – a thermistor and linearising circuit give electronic linear heat detection
  • Easy to check from any angle – twin fire LEDs allow 360° viewing
  • Shows an alarm elsewhere – a third terminal drives a remote indicator, 20 mA (max)
  • Fits most conventional systems – wide 9.5 – 30 V dc operating range
  • Independently approved – EN54 Class A1 & A1R, LPCB and VdS (G204044)
  • Clean white finish – white polycarbonate case

For installers

  • Power: 9.5 – 30 V dc. Quiescent current 35 µA (typ), maximum current in alarm 40 mA (typ).
  • Mounting: onto a compatible base, fixing centres 48 ~ 74 mm. Detector 76 g, 100 mm diameter, 38 mm high.
  • Cabling: three terminals, the third for a remote indicator with 20 mA (max) / 9.5-14 mA (typ) drive.

Frequently asked questions

Does this detector sense smoke?

No. It detects changes in temperature only and cannot detect smoke.

At what temperature does it go into alarm?

Its fixed temperature element is set at 60 °C. The rate of rise response can trigger earlier if the temperature climbs quickly.

Which bases does it fit?

The YBN-R/6, YBN-R/6SK, YBO-R/6R, YBO-R/6RS, YBO-R/6RN and YBO-R/6PA. Base fixing centres are 48 ~ 74 mm.

Can it be used outdoors?

No. It is designed for indoor use only, and has an IP63 rating.

How should it be tested?

With test equipment that exceeds the detection threshold, never a naked flame or open fire. Hochiki recommend maintenance at least once a year where no standard sets the period.

Can it go on an intruder alarm system?

Yes, it can. Its 9.5 - 30V range allows installation within both fire and security systems.

Hochiki DCD-AE3(WHT) heat detector, angled view, white

Hochiki Conventional Heat Detector, Rate of Rise and 60°C Fixed Temperature, White DCD-AE3(WHT)

Overview

A heat detector raises the alarm on temperature, not smoke. That makes it the usual choice for rooms where a smoke detector would give false alarms, though it reacts later to a slow, smouldering fire.

This Hochiki detector is for conventional, zone-based fire alarm systems, and it is supported on the majority of them through a range of bases.

How it works

  • Rate of rise: The detector watches how fast the temperature climbs, so a quickly growing fire can trigger it before the room gets very hot.
  • Fixed temperature: A 60 °C element acts as a backstop for a fire that heats the room slowly.
  • Thermistor: A thermistor is a sensor whose resistance changes with temperature. Here a linearising circuit turns that into an accurate, linear reading.

Where to use it

Avoid places with condensation or corrosive gases, and keep the area round it clear so nothing blocks airflow to the detector.

Plan each position against the fire regulations or recommendations that apply to the building.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 35 µA quiescent: the standby current is low, which matters when you add up a zone's load for battery standby.
  • 40 mA in alarm: each detector in alarm draws this much, so check the panel's zone can supply it.
  • -10 °C to +50 °C: the working range of the detector itself, which also sets a ceiling on the ambient temperature of the room.

Installing it

  • Dust cover: Leave the supplied dust cover on while other trades work, then take it off at commissioning, because the detector will not operate with it fitted.
  • Head locking: Removing a plastic lug on the underside locks the head onto its base. It then needs a removal tool to take it off.
  • Handling: Do not touch the thermistor in the centre of the detector.
  • Who fits it: Only suitably trained engineers should carry out installation and maintenance.

Planning your system

Each detector fits onto a mounting base from the compatible range. Choose the base to suit the zone wiring and the panel.

You will also need a conventional fire alarm control panel with a free zone, and cable suited to fire alarm circuits.

Standards and ratings explained

  • EN54-5: the standard for point type heat detectors. Class A1R means a Class A1 detector that also has a rate of rise response.
  • LPCB and VdS: independent bodies that test and approve fire detection products.
  • IP63: dust tight, and protected against spraying water. It does not make the detector suitable for outdoor use.
