Frequently asked questions

What does intrinsically safe mean here?

It means the detector is certified for use in hazardous atmospheres when it is powered through a certified barrier or isolator, at Category 1, 2 or 3.

Does it need a barrier?

Yes. It must be used with either a Zener Diode Barrier or a Galvanic Isolator, installed to that maker's instructions.

Which base does it use?

The YBN-R/4(IS) electronics free mounting base. That base may only be used with Hochiki intrinsically safe specified detector heads.

How many can go on one circuit?

Up to 20 DCD-1E-IS detectors with YBN-R/4 IS bases on one barrier circuit.

Can it be fitted outdoors?

No. Hochiki detectors are suitable for indoor use only.

Is there a white version?

Yes. The white case version is DCD-1E-IS(WHT); this code is the ivory case.

Hochiki DCD-1E-IS intrinsically safe heat detector, angled view, ivory case

Hochiki Intrinsically Safe Rate of Rise Heat Detector, ATEX, Ivory DCD-1E-IS

Overview

This Hochiki heat detector is made for hazardous areas, where an explosive gas atmosphere may be present. It combines rate of rise sensing with a 60° fixed temperature element.

It is meant for areas at Category 1, 2 or 3 that have been classified as hazardous. The case is ivory; a white version is sold separately.

How it works

  • Rate of rise: the detector reacts to a fast climb in temperature, the pattern of a developing fire.
  • Fixed element: the 60° fixed temperature element covers a fire that heats the room slowly.
  • Intrinsic safety: a barrier or isolator in the safe area limits the energy on the detector circuit, so a fault cannot release enough energy to ignite the atmosphere.

Where to use it

It is suitable for installation in Category 1, 2 or 3 hazardous atmospheres, with a maximum ambient temperature of up to 55°C. Hochiki detectors are for indoor use only.

Avoid places with excessive condensation, corrosive gas or flammable dust, and places where obstructions block the air flow to the detector.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Ex ia IIC T5: ia is the highest level of intrinsic safety protection, IIC covers the most easily ignited gas group, and T5 sets the maximum surface temperature class.
  • Up to 20 detectors: one barrier circuit takes up to 20 DCD-1E-IS detectors with their bases, so larger areas need more circuits.
  • IP63: the case resists dust and spraying water, but it is still an indoor device.

Installing it

The installer must follow the certification drawing, and Hochiki recommends that only qualified personnel carry out the installation. The barrier earth for a Zener Diode Barrier needs a high integrity connection; a Galvanic Isolator does not need it.

As a rule, label the intrinsically safe system and keep the certificate details with the fire alarm records.

Planning your system

Each head sits on the Hochiki YBN-R/4(IS) intrinsically safe base, which takes only Hochiki intrinsically safe heads. The white case version is the DCD-1E-IS(WHT) heat detector.

The zone runs back through the barrier to a conventional panel from the range of commercial fire alarm panels. Other rooms outside the hazardous area can use standard heat detectors.

This guide to heat detectors covers rate of rise and fixed temperature detection, and the guide to commercial fire alarm systems explains zones and categories. The wider Hochiki range covers bases and call points.
