  • Each device addressed – electronically addressed on the ESP protocol
  • Ivory case – white case version sold as ATJ-ENM(WHT)

For installers

  • Power: 17 to 41 VDC; quiescent mode current 350 µA (typ) at 24 VDC; alarm current 9.1 mA (excluding remote indicator).
  • Mounting: base fixing centres 48 ~ 74 mm. 100 mm diameter, 45 mm high, 95 g.
  • Compatibility: Hochiki ESP analogue addressable protocol; compatible bases YBO-BS, YBO-BSB2 and YBN-R/3(SCI)M. Control panel compatibility required.
  • Standards: approved to MED by DNV; IP42 to BS EN 60529:1992+A2 2013.

Frequently asked questions

Is it approved for marine use?

Yes. It is approved to MED by DNV. Check that approval against the requirements for the vessel.

How does it decide there is a fire?

It has a variable temperature element and a rate of rise element. The control panel sets either element, or both together, to make the fire decision.

Which panels does it work with?

Panels using Hochiki's ESP analogue addressable protocol. Control panel compatibility is required, so check the panel's documentation.

Which bases does it fit?

YBO-BS, YBO-BSB2 and YBN-R/3(SCI)M.

What do the LED colours mean?

Green when polling, amber when isolating and red in fire.

Hochiki Marine Approved Multi-Heat Sensor, ESP Analogue, Ivory ATJ-ENM

Overview

This Hochiki sensor detects fire by heat and reports to the panel over its addressable loop. It is the marine approved version, for fire systems on vessels.

MED is the usual short form of the Marine Equipment Directive, which governs equipment placed on vessels. Check the approval against the requirements for your vessel.

How it works

  • Two elements: a variable temperature element reacts at a set point, and a rate of rise element reacts to a fast climb in temperature.
  • Panel control: the control panel chooses which element, or both together, makes the fire decision.
  • Addressable: each sensor has its own address, so the panel shows exactly which one has triggered.

Where to use it

Heat sensing suits spaces where smoke detection would false alarm, such as areas with steam or fumes. The working range is -10 °C to + 50 °C, with humidity up to 95% RH non condensing.

At IP42 it is a ceiling device for sheltered interior spaces. The fire system designer decides which spaces take heat rather than smoke detection.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 350 µA quiescent: this standing current goes into the loop calculation for the panel, along with every other device.
  • 9.1 mA in alarm: the alarm current is controlled by the panel and excludes any remote indicator.

Installing it

Fit the compatible base first, then lock the sensor into it. Base fixing centres are 48 ~ 74 mm.

As a rule, keep sensors covered during dusty work and test each one with a heat tester at commissioning and service visits.

Planning your system

The sensor needs one of its compatible bases, such as the Hochiki YBO-BS sounder base or the YBO-BSB2 sounder beacon base where an alarm sound at the head is wanted. Check each sounder base's own mounting needs before ordering.

The loop runs back to an ESP addressable panel from the range of commercial fire alarm panels. The guide to commercial fire alarm systems explains why protocols must match.

This guide to heat detectors explains rate of rise and fixed temperature detection, and the wider Hochiki range covers bases and sounders.
