About this product

The Hochiki ALN-ENM(WHT) is a marine approved optical smoke detector for fire systems using the ESP analogue addressable protocol, in a white case. It suits installers specifying approved sensors on marine jobs. It is approved to MED by GL, runs at 17–41 VDC and must be matched to a compatible control panel.

Key features

  • Built for marine approval – approved to MED by GL
  • Readable from any side – twin LEDs allow 360° viewing, green when polling, amber when isolating, red in fire
  • Simple to clean – removable, High Performance chamber
  • Harder to pull off – locking mechanism (sensor to base)
  • Set up for the space – variable sensitivity
  • No address wheels to set – electronically addressed
  • Independently approved – LPCB & VdS approved to classes A1 & C

For installers

  • Power: 17–41 VDC. Quiescent current (typ) 400 µA, alarm current 9.1 mA (excluding remote indicator).
  • Mounting: fits a base with 48 ~ 74 mm fixing centres. 100 mm diameter / 45 mm height, 95 g.
  • Compatibility: compatible bases are YBO-BS, YBO-BSB2 and YBN-R/3(SCI)M. Control panel compatibility required.
  • Standards: LPCB & VdS approved to classes A1 & C, approved to MED by GL, IP42.

Frequently asked questions

Which bases does the ALN-ENM(WHT) fit?

The compatible bases are YBO-BS, YBO-BSB2 and YBN-R/3(SCI)M.

Which fire panels does it work with?

Panels using Hochiki's ESP analogue addressable protocol. Control panel compatibility is required, so check your panel's documentation first.

What do the LED colours mean?

Green when polling, amber when isolating and red in fire.

Can the chamber be cleaned?

Yes. The smoke chamber is easily removed or replaced for cleaning.

Does it replace an ionisation sensor?

In most cases. The chamber technology removes the need to use ionisation smoke sensors in the majority of applications.

Hochiki ALN-ENM(WHT) marine optical smoke sensor, underside angled view

Hochiki Marine Approved Optical Smoke Detector, ESP Analogue, White ALN-ENM(WHT)

What this smoke sensor does

This Hochiki sensor looks for smoke inside a small chamber and reports to the fire panel over its addressable loop. It is a marine approved photoelectric smoke sensor, and optical means the same thing.

MED is the usual short form of the Marine Equipment Directive, which governs equipment placed on vessels. Check the approval against the requirements for your vessel.

How it works

  • Optical sensing: As a rule, an optical sensor uses a light source and a receiver in a dark chamber. Smoke scatters the light on to the receiver.
  • Keeping the chamber dark: the baffle lets smoke enter while keeping out ambient light, so outside light does not disturb the reading.
  • Fewer false alarms: the chamber allows a raised threshold, which improves the signal to noise ratio and reduces susceptibility to false alarms.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Temperature range: the operating upper limit is lower than the storage limit, so a hot space needs checking even if the unit is stored safely there.
  • Humidity: the operating figure is for non-condensing air, so the sensor is not rated for spaces where water forms on surfaces.
  • Current on the loop: the alarm figure excludes a remote indicator. Include any indicator separately when adding up loop load.

Installing it

Fit the base first, using its own instructions, then lock the sensor to it. The pulsing or non-pulsing LED mode is controlled from the panel, and the sensitivity is variable.

As a rule, smoke sensors should stay covered during dusty work on site, and they should be cleaned or swapped at service visits as the system maintainer advises.

Planning your system

The base is a separate part, chosen from YBO-BS, YBO-BSB2 and YBN-R/3(SCI)M. Check against your specification whether a marine job needs anything further from the base.

Addressable panels only talk to devices built for their protocol, which is the main trap covered in this commercial fire alarm systems guide.
