About this product

The Hochiki CHQ-WSB2(WHT)/WL is a fire alarm sounder beacon for addressable loop systems, combining sound and light in one wall unit. It suits indoor positions where people need to hear and see the alarm. It has a white case, white LEDs and output of up to 102dB(A), with an O rated beacon.

Key features

  • One loop device for sound and light – an integral beacon within the horn
  • Volume to suit the area – 90 ~ 102 dB(A) (±2 dB(A)) at 1 metre
  • A tone to suit the site – 51 user-selectable tones, all EN54-3 approved
  • Standards-rated light – O' Rated Beacon to EN54-23
  • Blends with pale walls – white case with white LEDs

For installers

  • Power: loop powered, 17 ~ 41 Vdc. Sounding current 2 mA to 8 mA, plus 7 mA with the beacon active.
  • Mounting: base fixing centres 48 ~ 74 mm. Size H112 x W112 x D67 mm, 164 g. Address it first, between 1 and 127, using the hand-held programmer TCH-B200.
  • Compatibility: compatible bases are YBN-R/3(WHT)-SCI, YBO-R/3(RED), YBO-R/3(WHT) and YBO-R/SCI(RED). Do not use any other base type.
  • Standards: beacon O rated to EN54-23, tones EN54-3 approved. IP21 for internal use.

Frequently asked questions

What does WL mean in the code?

White LEDs. The bracketed WHT marks the white case, so this one has a white case and white LEDs.

Can it go outdoors?

Not as it comes. It is IP21 for internal use, and needs Hochiki's weather proofing kit outside. That gives IP65 when fitted to the kit's instructions, though LPCB approval only reaches IP33C.

Which base does it fit?

YBO-R/3(WHT) is the white standard base. YBN-R/3(WHT)-SCI, YBO-R/3(RED) and YBO-R/SCI(RED) are also compatible. Do not use any other type.

How is the address set?

With the TCH-B200 hand-held programmer, before installation. Use an address between 1 and 127.

How much current does it draw?

Typically 150 μA at rest on a YBO-R/3(WHT) base. With sounder and beacon both active it draws 9.0 mA at 90 dB(A), rising to 15.0 mA at 102 dB(A).

Will an older panel recognise it?

Usually, but perhaps under another name. A panel that has not implemented it will see a YBO-BSB2, and the volume levels then shift, so 55dB(A) selected becomes 90dB(A) actual.

Hochiki CHQ-WSB2(WHT)/WL wall sounder beacon, front angled view

Hochiki Fire Alarm Sounder Beacon, White Case, White LEDs CHQ-WSB2(WHT)/WL

Overview

This device gives a warning tone and a flashing light from a single point on an addressable fire alarm loop. Addressable means every device has its own number, so the panel can name the one it is talking to.

It belongs to the wider family of Hochiki sounders, and it suits installers extending or building an ESP loop as well as anyone specifying a white finish.

How it works

  • Panel control: Tone and volume come from the control panel, so options and default values depend on that panel.
  • Separate elements: The sound and the light can be run independently. Check with the panel manufacturer that yours supports it.
  • Timed silence: Set any time limit only as the system design and fire strategy allow, and check that the panel supports it.

Where to use it

Dry indoor walls are its natural home. Avoid excessively high ambient temperature, excessive condensation or moisture, and hazardous areas.

As a rule, a flashing light helps in noisy rooms and for people who may not hear a tone. Whoever holds the fire strategy decides where visual alarms are needed.

What the figures mean in practice

  • O rating: Hochiki's ratings start with a letter for the category, and “O” for Open is the one on this beacon. Volume Coverage = 16.25 m3 for the white LED version.
  • Flash setting: The 0.5Hz default is the O rated setting, and 1Hz is a compatibility mode. The ratings are based on 0.5Hz, so keep the default unless the design says otherwise.
  • Loop loading: Take current differences into account when calculating total loop loading, especially on panels that treat it as a YBO-BSB2.

Installing it

  • Fixing: Fix the base to the wall first. The terminals on the base then hold the unit in place, in the same way as a sensor.
  • Locking: Removing a plastic lug on the underside locks it to the base. It then needs the special removal tool TSE-SRT to come off.
  • Testing: A high voltage tester must not be used with these units or the specified bases, so disconnect them before any insulation test.

Planning your system

The job also needs a compatible base, a programmer for addressing and a panel that speaks the same language. The fire alarm system guide explains why protocol comes first when choosing devices.

See the fire alarm sounders and beacons range if you need a different colour or a sounder without a light.

Standards and ratings explained

  • EN54-3: the standard for fire alarm sounders, which is why each tone is approved rather than only the device.
  • EN54-23: the standard for visual alarm devices, the flashing lights used to warn people of a fire.
  • IP21: an ingress protection code showing basic protection only, which is why the unit is for internal use.
