Honeywell ASD Pipe Clip, 5.0mm Sampling Hole, Green, Pack of 5 F-PC-5

What this clip is for

Aspirating smoke detection, often shortened to ASD, draws air through drilled pipework to a detector. On a high warehouse ceiling, it can be almost impossible to see where each hole is, or whether it is the right size.

This clip sits over the hole and answers both questions by colour. It belongs to Honeywell's CLIP Hole Identification system, and it is sold in packs, not one at a time.

How it works

• A hole set by the clip: the pipe is drilled large, and the clip's own opening then limits the hole to the size wanted.
• A chamfered entry: a chamfer is an angled edge. A standard drilled hole is likely to gather dust, because of static from the airflow, and the angled entry reduces that effect.

Where to use it

It suits large format applications such as warehouses and big open spaces with high ceilings, where a person on the floor needs to read the pipework from a distance.

For freezer sites, there is a separate Harsh Environment range. This Standard clip does not carry that range's flexi-lip.

What the figures mean in practice

• 5.0mm hole: this is the air opening, and it sets how much air that point draws. As a rule, the size for each position should come from the pipe design calculation, not from what is to hand.
• 7 bar: this is the most pressure the pipe network may reach with the clip fitted, and it matters if a purge system blows air back through the pipe.
• Humidity: the application range is 5% to 95% relative humidity.

Installing it

• Drill first: use one drill bit for the whole run, which saves carrying several sizes.
• Match the colour: fit the clip the design calls for at each hole, so the colour on the pipe always agrees with the plan.
• Listen for it: press on until it clicks. Follow the installation instructions supplied with the product.

Planning your system

Later visits are the other reason to use clips. Honeywell describes them as helping service engineers and auditors and increasing uptime. Keep to the service and testing intervals your system design sets.

As a rule, count the holes at each size from the design, and remember that a pipe run often needs more than one clip size.
