Frequently asked questions

What length is the RPD04500?

4500 mm. Once supplied, a Dado panic strip cannot be altered in length.

Can it be pressed anywhere along the strip?

Yes: it has a press-at-any-point, momentary, normally-open contact and can be operated along its entire length.

What end-caps come with it?

2 trunking end-caps designed to fit 25 x 15 mm trunking, for cables run externally, and 2 closed end-caps for embedded cables. Additional end-caps are part number RPDEC.

Can it go around corners?

Yes, with flexible corners (part number RPDFC), which let the strip flow around internal and external corners without a break. Leave a minimum gap of 55 mm for an external corner and 70 mm for an internal corner.

How is it monitored for faults?

Hoyles recommends its Redimon monitor unit (REDIMON5), which monitors the strip for alarms and faults and provides relay outputs for both conditions, using a 6k8 end-of-line resistor at the remote end of the strip.

Is it waterproof?

The ribbon switch is fully water-sealed and the maker rates the strip IP65; its typical uses include wet environments such as changing rooms and washrooms.

What it is

The RPD04500 is the 4500 mm length of the Hoyles Dado Panic and Affray Switch Strip, a switch strip encased in a high-durability housing for use as a panic or affray alarm. It can be operated along its entire length. The parts are the switch strip, a tamper-resistant top cover and an aluminium mounting rail, with a choice of end-caps.

The switch is a normally open switch with flying leads on both ends for connection; the leads are 100 mm long at each end of the strip. The ribbon switch is fully water-sealed, the maker rates the strip IP65, and when fully assembled the system is tamper-resistant.

Hoyles lists typical uses in police stations, residential care homes, hospitals, public sector buildings, transportation, assembly lines, wet environments such as changing rooms and washrooms, and emergency vehicles.

Ordering and parts

Once supplied, the strip cannot be altered in length; this code is the 4500 mm length. By default Hoyles supplies Dado in red and grey, and in blue on request.

Each strip comes with 2 trunking end-caps, designed to fit 25 x 15 mm trunking where cables run externally, and 2 closed end-caps where cables are embedded. Additional end-caps are part number RPDEC; flexible corners, which let the strip flow around internal and external corners without a break, are part number RPDFC.

Installation

Fix the base securely to the wall, place the ribbon switch in the base, make the lead connections to the ribbon switch and snap the tamper-resistant top cover into place. The two grooves on the aluminium channel denote the top and should face upwards when the channel is attached to the wall.

The switch goes in under the upper lip of the aluminium channel and is then pressed in at the bottom; installed any other way, including pulled in from the side or forced under the bottom lip first, it will suffer damage.

With a standard end, leave a minimum gap of 33 mm between the end of the aluminium channel and the wall. With a corner piece, the minimum gap is 55 mm for an external corner and 70 mm for an internal corner.

Monitoring and connection

Hoyles recommends its Redimon monitor unit (REDIMON5), which monitors the panic strip for both alarms and faults and provides relay outputs for both conditions. With the Redimon, a 6k8 end-of-line resistor is installed at the remote end of each strip: pressing the strip creates a short circuit, which the Redimon detects as an alarm, and a disconnected or damaged strip triggers a fault condition.

Dado can be connected to Hoyles products including the Aidalarm disabled toilet alarm and the Multiguard indicator range.
