About this product

Please note: this is a non-returnable item (excluding faulty goods)

The Milestone Systems HE1000R-64TB is a Husky IVO 1000R two-rack-unit (2U) rack-mount network video recording appliance supplied with 64 TB of raw drive capacity across eight hard drive bays.

The Husky IVO 1000R is the rack-mount unit in Milestone's Husky IVO appliance range. It is built for installations where the recording server has to keep running through a component failure. It arrives preloaded with Milestone XProtect video management software, so the appliance and the software come from the same manufacturer and are supported by the same company.

Milestone quotes a throughput of up to 1080 Mbit/s for the 1000R and recommends it for installations of up to 150 channels. That is based on a 1080p stream at 30 FPS and 5-8 Mbit/s per channel with video motion detection recording. The 64 TB configuration is made up of eight 8 TB enterprise-grade drives; the same model scales to 128 TB of raw local storage.

Redundancy is designed in rather than added on: the operating system runs from two mirrored M.2 SSDs, the video drives sit behind a hardware RAID controller, and the power supplies are redundant and hot-plug. It is a 2U rack unit with iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management included. It drops into an existing comms room and can be monitored with the same tools an IT team already uses for its servers.

Key features

  • 64 TB of raw storage: this configuration ships with eight 8 TB enterprise-grade drives fitted, giving 64 TB of raw capacity before any RAID overhead is taken into account.
  • Eight hot-plug drive bays: the chassis carries eight 3.5 inch hot-plug bays, so a failed drive can be replaced without taking the appliance out of the rack.
  • Scales to 128 TB: Milestone offers the 1000R with up to 128 TB of raw local storage, so a site specified at 64 TB today has a documented upgrade path within the same model.
  • Up to 1080 Mbit/s throughput: Milestone rates the 1000R at up to 1080 Mbit/s and recommends it for up to 150 channels at 1080p and 30 FPS with motion detection recording.
  • Mirrored operating system drives: the video management software and operating system run from two 240 GB M.2 SSDs in RAID 1, so an OS drive failure does not take the recorder down.
  • Hardware RAID on the video drives: the recording array is handled by a hardware RAID controller rather than software, keeping the array intact through a drive failure.
  • Redundant hot-plug power supplies: the appliance takes dual hot-plug power supplies, so a supply or a feed can fail without interrupting recording.
  • iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management: out-of-band management is included with its licence, so the unit can be monitored, updated and recovered without a visit to the rack.
  • Archiving to external storage: recordings can be archived to an external NAS over the LAN port when retention needs to run longer than the internal array allows.
  • Preloaded with XProtect: the appliance is supplied with Milestone XProtect already loaded and can be used with any XProtect variant; VMS licences are bought separately, and XProtect Essential+ is free for up to eight cameras.
  • Five year hardware warranty: Milestone covers the appliance with a five year full system warranty that includes the hard drives, with next business day on-site support. Milestone states that the on-site service follows its own support procedures, needs exact hardware service tag information, and is subject to regional availability and dependent on Dell Technologies' support network.
  • Rack environment: Milestone gives the 1000R an operating range of 10 to 35 °C and a storage range of -40 to 65 °C, at 10-85% non-condensing humidity.
  • Credential protection in hardware: a Trusted Platform Module (TPM 2.0) is fitted for credential and key encryption.

Use cases

This is the appliance you specify when a video system has stopped being a convenience and started being infrastructure. That means a distribution centre, a hospital wing, a campus, a custody suite, a manufacturing site or a multi-building estate. On those sites a day of lost recording is a real problem rather than an inconvenience.

It suits sites already running Milestone XProtect that need a properly redundant recording server in the rack, and sites moving up from a small desktop recorder that have outgrown both the storage and the resilience. Milestone recommends using the 1000R as the XProtect management and recording server, and doing the live viewing on a separate machine through XProtect Smart Client. Plan on a workstation alongside it rather than watching video on the appliance itself.

The 64 TB build is a sensible starting point where retention is measured in weeks across a moderate camera count rather than months across hundreds. The same model takes up to 128 TB if that changes.

Milestone Husky IVO 2U rack-mount recording appliance

Milestone Systems Husky IVO 1000R 2U Rack-Mount NVR Appliance, 64TB

Who this is for

For the installer: this is the rack-mount tier of Milestone's Husky IVO appliance range, and it is specified when the recording server has to survive a component failure without losing the estate's video. You get a 2U chassis with eight hot-plug 3.5 inch bays populated to 64 TB raw, and two mirrored M.2 SSDs carrying the operating system and the video management software.

There is a hardware RAID controller on the video array, redundant hot-plug power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise for out-of-band access. Milestone rates the 1000R at up to 1080 Mbit/s and recommends it for up to 150 channels at 1080p, 30 FPS and 5-8 Mbit/s per channel with motion detection recording. Plan the commissioning around the Husky Assistant wizard, and plan the viewing on a separate workstation running XProtect Smart Client.

Plan the rack space, mains feeds and network drops before the unit lands. A special order appliance at this value should not sit in a store room waiting for a comms cabinet.

In plain English: this is the box that records and keeps the CCTV for a whole site or a whole estate. It is a server that lives in a rack in a comms room rather than a small recorder that sits on a shelf.

It arrives with 64 terabytes of storage already fitted and with Milestone's own recording software already installed, so the people setting it up are not building a computer from scratch. The important part is what happens when something breaks: a hard disk can fail, or one of the two power supplies can fail, and the system carries on recording while somebody swaps the failed part. That is the difference between this and a cheaper recorder, and it is the reason it costs what it costs.

Buying this in the UK

  • This is a special order line rather than a shelf item, so allow lead time and confirm the delivery date before you commit to a commissioning date on site.
  • It is supplied as a non-returnable item excluding faulty goods, so the capacity and the model need to be right before the order is placed rather than after the crate is opened.
  • Milestone lists the 1000R with a five year full system hardware warranty that includes the hard drives, together with next business day on-site support. Milestone qualifies that support: it follows Milestone's own support procedures, requires exact hardware service tag information, and is subject to regional availability and dependent on Dell Technologies' support network.
  • The appliance carries UKCA and CE (Class A) marking along with FCC, RCM, UL, Mexico (NOM) and VCCI, and Milestone states that it is NDAA compliant, which matters on public sector and defence-adjacent frameworks.
  • XProtect is preloaded but the VMS licences are bought separately, so budget for the software licences alongside the hardware unless the site is running within the free XProtect Essential+ allowance of up to eight cameras.
  • If you need us to confirm the exact hardware revision Milestone is currently shipping against this ordering code before you order, ask us and we will get it in writing from the manufacturer.

Questions we get asked

  • How much usable storage do I actually get? The 64 TB figure is raw capacity across eight 8 TB drives. Once the array is configured with RAID the usable figure will be lower, and how much lower depends on the RAID level you choose. Size the retention against usable capacity rather than the headline number.
  • Can I add storage later? Milestone offers the same model with up to 128 TB of raw local storage. Recordings can also be archived to an external NAS over the LAN port, when retention has to run longer than the internal array allows.
  • Can I watch live video on the appliance itself? Milestone recommends using the unit as the XProtect management and recording server, and doing live view and playback on a separate machine through XProtect Smart Client. Treat a viewing workstation as part of the design.
  • Does it work with cameras that are not Milestone? Yes. The appliance runs Milestone XProtect, which supports a very wide range of third-party IP cameras and encoders, so the appliance does not tie you to one camera brand.
  • What happens if a drive fails? The video drives sit on a hardware RAID controller and the bays are hot-plug, so a failed drive can be exchanged without powering the appliance down. The operating system itself runs from two mirrored SSDs, so an OS drive failure is survivable too.
