The Milestone Systems HE1000R-64TB is a Husky IVO 1000R two-rack-unit (2U) rack-mount network video recording appliance supplied with 64 TB of raw drive capacity across eight hard drive bays.

The Husky IVO 1000R is the rack-mount unit in Milestone's Husky IVO appliance range. It is built for installations where the recording server has to keep running through a component failure. It arrives preloaded with Milestone XProtect video management software, so the appliance and the software come from the same manufacturer and are supported by the same company.

Milestone quotes a throughput of up to 1080 Mbit/s for the 1000R and recommends it for installations of up to 150 channels. That is based on a 1080p stream at 30 FPS and 5-8 Mbit/s per channel with video motion detection recording. The 64 TB configuration is made up of eight 8 TB enterprise-grade drives; the same model scales to 128 TB of raw local storage.

Redundancy is designed in rather than added on: the operating system runs from two mirrored M.2 SSDs, the video drives sit behind a hardware RAID controller, and the power supplies are redundant and hot-plug. It is a 2U rack unit with iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management included. It drops into an existing comms room and can be monitored with the same tools an IT team already uses for its servers.

• Redundant hot-plug power supplies: the appliance takes dual hot-plug power supplies, so a supply or a feed can fail without interrupting recording.
• iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management: out-of-band management is included with its licence, so the unit can be monitored, updated and recovered without a visit to the rack.
• Archiving to external storage: recordings can be archived to an external NAS over the LAN port when retention needs to run longer than the internal array allows.
• Preloaded with XProtect: the appliance is supplied with Milestone XProtect already loaded and can be used with any XProtect variant; VMS licences are bought separately, and XProtect Essential+ is free for up to eight cameras.
• Five year hardware warranty: Milestone covers the appliance with a five year full system warranty that includes the hard drives, with next business day on-site support. Milestone states that the on-site service follows its own support procedures, needs exact hardware service tag information, and is subject to regional availability and dependent on Dell Technologies' support network.
• Rack environment: Milestone gives the 1000R an operating range of 10 to 35 °C and a storage range of -40 to 65 °C, at 10-85% non-condensing humidity.
• Credential protection in hardware: a Trusted Platform Module (TPM 2.0) is fitted for credential and key encryption.

Use cases

This is the appliance you specify when a video system has stopped being a convenience and started being infrastructure. That means a distribution centre, a hospital wing, a campus, a custody suite, a manufacturing site or a multi-building estate. On those sites a day of lost recording is a real problem rather than an inconvenience.

It suits sites already running Milestone XProtect that need a properly redundant recording server in the rack, and sites moving up from a small desktop recorder that have outgrown both the storage and the resilience. Milestone recommends using the 1000R as the XProtect management and recording server, and doing the live viewing on a separate machine through XProtect Smart Client. Plan on a workstation alongside it rather than watching video on the appliance itself.

The 64 TB build is a sensible starting point where retention is measured in weeks across a moderate camera count rather than months across hundreds. The same model takes up to 128 TB if that changes.
