About this product

The Notifier NFXI-OPT is an addressable optical smoke detector with isolator for fire alarm loops. It suits installers extending or building a Notifier system, and maintainers replacing a head. Photoelectric sensing detects the smoke, and tri colour LEDs and rotary address switches make it easier to set up and check.

Key features

  • Isolator built in – a photoelectric smoke detector with built in short circuit isolation
  • Fewer nuisance alarms from dust – improved resilience to false alarms through dust
  • Status visible all round – two integral tri-colour LEDs give 360° local visual indication
  • Colours you can set – programmable with static or blinking red, amber and green
  • Addresses set by hand – rotary decade address switches
  • Designed to suit existing panels – backwards compatible on the AM2000N, AM4000 and AM6000N, so check any other panel first

For installers

  • Power: voltage range 15 to 32Vdc. Standby 270µA @ 24Vdc max. avg. standby, isolation current 15mA @ 24Vdc.
  • Mounting: Diameter 102mm, height 52mm installed in B501. There is also a B524RTE-W base with relay.
  • Cabling: wiring 2.5mm². Remote output 22.5Vdc – 10.8mA.
  • Compatibility: the previous protocol is ensured on AM2000N, AM4000 and AM6000N panels, up to 99+99 addresses. Check any later panel.
  • Standards: conforms to EN54-7. IP30, or IP33 with WB-1AP.

Frequently asked questions

What does the isolator do on the NFXI-OPT?

It provides built in short circuit isolation, which helps keep a fault to one section of the loop. The isolation current is 15mA @ 24Vdc.

Does it come with a base?

Allow for one. Bases such as the B501AP have their own codes.

Will it work with an existing Notifier panel?

Usually yes on the AM2000N, AM4000 and AM6000N panels. There it gives the same functionality as 700 Series. For any other panel, check the panel's protocol first.

How is the address set?

With the rotary decade address switches on the detector.

Can it be used in a damp area?

Not as supplied. It is rated IP30, or IP33 with the WB-1AP cover. Humidity is 10 to 93% (without condensate). Check the position with the system designer.

How many devices can go on a loop?

Up to 159 devices and modules per loop on the new digital protocol. Those extra features depend on a new range of control panel, so check yours.

Notifier NFXI-OPT Addressable Optical Smoke Detector with Isolator, EN54-7

What this detector does

A smoke detector watches for smoke and tells the fire alarm panel when it finds it. On an addressable system, each device has its own identity, so the panel can point to the one in alarm.

This Notifier model adds an isolator to that job. It suits loops where a fault on one section should not take down the rest.

How it works

  • Photoelectric sensing: this is another name for optical sensing, where smoke scatters light inside a chamber on to a sensor.
  • Isolator: if a short circuit happens on a loop, isolators either side cut off that section so the remainder keeps working.
  • Chamber: improved detection across multiple fire types comes from its chamber design.

What the figures mean in practice

  • LED current: red draws 3.5mA, green 7.0mA and amber 10.5mA, so the colour you programme changes the load on the loop.
  • Isolation current: 15mA is the figure given for this version, so include it when you check the loop.
  • Loop resistance: each one adds 20mΩ. A long loop of these adds up, so include it in your cable calculation.
  • Temperature: the -30°C to +70°C range is wide, but check it against any cold store or roof space.

Installing it

  • Setting the address: dial it in on the detector and record each address against its location as you go.
  • Remote output: 22.5Vdc – 10.8mA, so check any repeat light against that before wiring it.
  • Who does it: fire alarm installation and commissioning are work for a competent person, working to the system design.

Planning your system

Allow a base for each head. Fitting options include a surface kit, a flush kit, a base with relay and a water cover cap.

The panel matters most, because a panel and its devices must share a protocol. Read the protocol off your own panel before ordering.

Standards explained

  • EN54-7: the European standard for point smoke detectors.
  • IP30: the 3 means protection against solid objects over 2.5mm, and the 0 means no stated protection against water.
  • WEEE and RoHS: European rules on electrical waste and on hazardous substances. The detector meets both.
