About this product

The Notifier M701E is a single output module for switching a load from an addressable fire alarm loop. It suits installers who need a panel command to drive equipment such as a supervised load or a set of changeover contacts. Its relay is rated 2A at 30VDC, and it has built-in short circuit isolation.

Key features

  • One output from the control panel – switches an external power supply to operate load devices on command
  • Wiring faults get noticed – optionally supervises the wiring to the load devices
  • Warns of a low supply – raises an unlatched fault condition if the external supply falls below the fixed threshold
  • Can work as a plain switch – unsupervised mode gives a single form C (changeover) set of contacts
  • A short need not take down the loop – built-in isolators can be selected or deselected module by module
  • Status is easy to read – tri-colour light pipes viewable on two sides without removing the surface box cover

For installers

  • Power: loop operating voltage range 15 to 32VDC, maximum standby current 160µA at 24VDC no communications. The load needs its own external power supply.
  • Mounting: a common wall box, a DIN rail or its dedicated enclosure, with DIN brackets built in. Height 22 mm, width 93 mm including terminal block.
  • Cabling: terminals take a maximum wire gauge of 2.5 mm2, with quick connectors.
  • Compatibility: CLIP and Advanced Protocol. Check that your panel supports one of these.
  • Standards: Intertek Approved. IP30, or IP44 in the M200E-SMB surface mounting box.

Frequently asked questions

What does a single output module do?

It lets the fire alarm panel switch something on command. This one switches an external power supply through to load devices, or works as a changeover contact.

Can the M701E switch mains voltage?

No. The contact rating is 2A at 30VDC, resistive load, and a separate M701E-240 handles 240V switching.

Does it need its own power supply?

Yes, for the load. The module runs from the loop's voltage range, while the devices it operates are fed from an external power supply.

Does it have a built-in isolator?

Yes. It has built-in short circuit isolation, and the isolator can be selected or deselected on an individual module basis.

Which panels does it work with?

Usually panels running CLIP or Advanced Protocol. Check your panel's own details.

How is it mounted?

In a common wall box, on a DIN rail or in its dedicated enclosure. The DIN brackets are built into the enclosure.

Notifier Single Output Module, Addressable, Built-in Isolator M701E

What this module is for

A fire alarm panel watches its detectors and call points over a loop, but it often also has to make other things happen. A module like this gives the panel a point on the loop where it can switch a load.

This Notifier unit handles one output. Other modules in the same range handle inputs, or a mix of the two.

How it works

  • Supervised mode: the wiring to the load is checked while idle. On command the supervision drops out and a double pole relay connects the outside supply to the load.
  • Unsupervised mode: nothing is monitored, and the unit behaves as a set of contacts for the panel to operate.
  • Form C: this is another name for changeover contacts, which have a common terminal plus a normally open and a normally closed side.
  • Short circuit isolator: an isolator cuts off a shorted section of the loop, so the devices beyond it can keep working from the other direction.

Where to use it

Typical jobs are driving a circuit of sounders from its own supply, or signalling plant such as a shutter or air handling control through contacts.

It is rated IP30 as supplied. Its rating rises only inside the M200E-SMB surface box.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Resistive load: the 2A figure is for simple loads. Coils and motors are harder on contacts, so allow a margin or use an interposing relay.
  • Standby current: this small draw is what the module adds to the loop while idle. Add it to your loop calculation along with every other device.
  • No communications: the standby figure is taken with no polling on the loop, so a working loop may draw more.

Installing it

  • Choosing a housing: fit it in a wall box, clip it to a DIN rail inside a cabinet, or use one of the surface boxes. The knockout version suits 20 mm conduit entries, and the larger box takes up to six modules.
  • Setting the address: set the rotary switches to the address your panel programme expects. The switches stay visible and reachable on every mounting method.
  • Fault finding: the light pipes carry the LED to two sides, so the status can be read with the cover of the surface box still on.

Planning your system

Budget for the external power supply as well as the module, and size it for the load. Its voltage has to stay above the module's threshold, or the panel will show a fault.

Check the fit against your fire alarm panel too. It needs one of these protocols, and the module's address has to be programmed in.

If the output releases doors or controls shutters, agree how they should behave in an alarm with whoever holds the fire strategy. That decision belongs to the design of the whole fire alarm system.

Ratings explained

  • IP30: the 3 means protection against solid objects over 2.5mm. The 0 means no stated protection against water.
  • IP44: the 4 means protection against objects over 1mm and the second 4 against splashing water. It applies only with the module inside the M200E-SMB.
